§ CNM Nutrition Student Receives $50,000 Scholarship from USDA: Suzanne Porter-Bolton, a CNM Nutrition major, has been awarded a $50,000 United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) scholarship funded by a Healthy Meals Fit for Life grant. It is one of the largest scholarships a CNM student has ever received. “I am so excited to receive this scholarship,” Porter-Bolton said. “It will help make my dream come true of earning a (Bachelor of Science) and (Master of Science) in nutrition and becoming a registered dietitian. My long-term goal is to work with pregnant women, people with diabetes and children.” The Albuquerque-native added that she wants to help economically disadvantaged people and teach them that there are better options than the “value menu.” Porter-Bolton is graduating with her associate degree in Nutrition this summer and plans to attend the University of New Mexico studying nutrition and dietetics in the fall.
§ Instructor Named EMS Educator of the Year: Kathy Kaestner, full-time Emergency Medical Services faculty and clinical coordinator at CNM, was named Emergency Medical Services Educator of the Year at the EMS State Conference on July 26 in Albuquerque. “It was nice that the award came from the EMS community – providers, other instructors, people I’ve worked with for the past 20 years,” Kaestner said. Kaestner started out as an emergency medical technician in the late 1980s and became a paramedic in 1991. She came to CNM in 2005 to help start the EMS program.
§ CNM, NMSU Offer Path to Bachelor’s in Hospitality & Tourism Field: CNM students who are pursuing an associate degree in the Hospitality and Tourism program now have the opportunity to transfer and earn a bachelor’s in Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management from New Mexico State University – all without venturing beyond Albuquerque. Starting in fall 2013, CNM students can study to earn their Bachelor of Science degree from NMSU by taking a series of face-to-face and online courses. As current CNM students or CNM graduates, they could qualify to begin classes at NMSU as juniors. According to the Tourism Association of New Mexico, the tourism industry contributed approximately $5.5 billion to the economy last year. As a leading industry in the state, hospitality careers continue to be in demand. § Bookstore, Culinary Arts and Foundation Move to New Digs on Main Campus: CNM’s newly renovated building at the corner of Basehart Rd. and University Blvd. (723 University Blvd.) is starting to come to life. The first occupants open for business are the Main Campus Bookstore and the CNM Foundation. The Culinary Arts program is in the process of moving to the building and will be ready for students and classes at the start of the fall term. There will also be a café in the building. The CNM Governing Board was to consider a new name for the building at the August 13 Board meeting.
§ CNM Teaches School Cafeteria Workers to Make More Nutritious Meals: School cafeteria workers from throughout New Mexico came to CNM in July to learn how to make more nutritious meals for K-12 students. This was the second year CNM teamed up with the New Mexico Public Education Department’s Student Nutrition Bureau to offer one-and-a-half day classes focusing on culinary math, safety and sanitation, nutrition and cooking well-balanced meals. Cafeteria workers took classes in culinary math, learning to convert recipes to more servings; nutrition, where they were given an overview of nutrition concepts; and safety and sanitation where they were taught about cross contamination, personal sanitation, and what happens when they cook food improperly. A USDA grant awarded to CNM, Healthy Meals Fit for Life, paid for the CNM instructors and food. A second USDA grant managed by the Student Nutrition Bureau – Team Nutrition Grant – provided funds for lodging and stipends for participants. The training was provided for 54 cafeteria workers.
