♦ Record Number of Students Walking in Graduation Ceremony: The thrill of becoming a college graduate as thousands of supporters cheer from the seats of Tingley Coliseum is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that continues to gain in popularity. On Dec. 8 at Tingley, more than 620 graduates walked in the Fall 2012 CNM Graduation Ceremony, which set the college record for participation in a graduation ceremony. The previous record was set in the Spring 2012 Graduation Ceremony, when 575 graduates walked. Participation in the graduation ceremonies, which are held at the end of the spring and fall terms, has been on the rise the last few years. On Saturday, graduates also got to hear from Albuquerque Mayor Richard J. Berry, who delivered the keynote address. Back when there was one graduation ceremony per year held at The Pit in the spring, the highest number of graduates participating in the event was 465. The spring and fall ceremonies this year totaled about 1,195 graduates participating. At Saturday's ceremony, counting family, friends and employees, about 8,000 people were in attendance cheering on the graduates in Tingley.
♦ Governing Board Seats Up for Election Feb. 5 – Candidacy Deadline Dec. 18: Five seats on the CNM Governing Board will be up for election on Feb. 5. Candidates must live within the CNM District and the deadline to file for candidacy is Dec. 18. Four of the positions to be filled through the election will be for Districts 1,3, 5 and 7, which will be four-year terms. The fifth position for District 2 will be for a two-year term to complete the remainder of an unfinished term that commenced in 2011. ♦ Volunteers Needed for Tax Help New Mexico: The Tax Help New Mexico program is seeking volunteers to help prepare taxes during the upcoming tax season. After completing the training, volunteers are able to help community members file their tax returns and identify important tax credits that can provide them with larger tax returns and a better financial outlook. One tax credit that volunteers are trained to identify is the Earned Income Tax Credit. Volunteers are required to pass an IRS certification. Trainings are held in January. ♦ New Dean Announced for School of Business & Information Technology: Donna Diller, currently the associate dean for the School of Business & Information Technology (BIT), will become the new dean for BIT on Jan. 2. "I look forward to collaborating with our community partners and faculty to explore new programs and innovative initiatives," Diller said. "Maintaining a supportive and welcoming environment for our students, staff and faculty will continue to be a priority." Diller began her career at CNM in 2006 as director of the Culinary Arts and Hospitality programs in BIT. Since then, she has served as a full-time faculty member, director of Instruction, program coordinator, grant manager and associate dean overseeing Accounting, Business Administration, Hospitality & Tourism, Culinary Arts, Project Management and Financial Literacy. Diller earned her bachelor's degree in Organizational Management from Concordia University and her master's degree in Educational Leadership from New Mexico State University.
♦ Students Organize Toy and Winter Coat Drive: CNM's Executive Council of Students is conducting a toy and winter coat donation drive that will benefit children in the area. "We really care about our community and we wanted to help out any way we can," said student Stephen Martos, president of the Executive Council of Students. "We thought a toy and coat drive would be the perfect way to help our community this holiday season." If you have new, unopened toys or gently used winter coats for kids, you can donate them at the CNM Connect location at any campus. The Executive Council of Students will distribute donated toys and winter coats to local charities for area kids in need. The toy and winter coat drive will run through Dec. 13. ♦ CNM Provides Free English as a Second Language Class to Operations Staff: CNM employees Anthony Rael, director of Operations, Pam Etre-Perez, dean of the School of Adult & General Education (SAGE), and Tom Pierce, director of Adult Basic Education, teamed up to start an English as a Second Language class for Operations employees seeking to improve their English skills. The ESL class is currently being provided to 14 employees free of charge twice per week, and employees take the class during their regular work hours. Rael came up with the idea after hearing a common theme during employee evaluations – many employees with native languages other than English would frequently mention that an ESL class would be a very helpful professional development opportunity. Rael approached SAGE about the possibility of offering an ESL class to employees. Etre-Perez and Pierce embraced the idea and got the ball rolling. "This is a great example of CNM being willing to invest in its employees," Etre-Perez said. "It's a great workplace literacy program." Faculty member Terry Toman teaches the class and says it's "working like a charm" for the employees. The Albuquerque Journal featured a story about the class on its front page Dec. 3.
