CNM’s Advanced Technology Center Earns LEED Gold
The renovated Advanced Technology Center has been awarded the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. It’s the third CNM building and the second renovation project to receive the coveted LEED Gold honor. Once the site of a Motorola factory, the renovated center opened to students in fall 2011. The renovated ATC uses 30 percent less water than a typical building of similar size. Restrooms are equipped with low-flow, motion-detecting faucets and water-saving toilets and urinals. In addition, CNM invested in “green power” for the building by purchasing off-site renewable power, a decision that ultimately led to the Gold certification.
CNM Prepares to Go for Green in RecycleMania Tournament
As part of an overall surge in sustainability efforts at CNM, the college has thrown its hat in the ring for the 2014 RecycleMania Tournament. More than 600 colleges and universities from across the U.S. and Canada have entered the competition. CNM, the lone entry from New Mexico, will compete against other community colleges from coast to coast. The competition begins Feb. 2 and continues for two months. Each week, the amount of material recycled from all CNM locations will be weighed by Waste Management and reported to RecycleMania. The winning schools will receive awards made out of recycled materials, in addition to the pride that comes from contributing to the health of the planet.
Faculty Member Receives Presidential Award
Greg Pitz, Ph.D., a research scientist at the Air Force Research Laboratory in Albuquerque and part-time faculty member at Central New Mexico Community College, has been named a recipient of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. It is the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their careers. A total of 102 researchers from around the country will be presented the award later this year at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. Pitz’s specialties are laser physics, spectroscopy and chemical kinetics. At CNM, he teaches physics and astronomy.
Delta Dental of New Mexico Invests $50,000 in CNM Students
Delta Dental of New Mexico recently donated $50,000 to the CNM Foundation to create a Student Success Award for students in the college’s Dental Assistant certificate program. The Delta Dental Student Success Scholarship will help students with the costs associated with transitioning from school to employment. It can cover such expenses as licenses, certification or testing fees and purchase of supplies or professional attire. Awards will be no less than $500 and will be distributed based on strong financial need coupled with job-related costs that could prevent a student from successfully transitioning into a career. High academic performance is another criterion.
