Congratulations to SkillsUSA Team and Advisors! CNM students received two gold medals, nine silver medals, one bronze medal, several TOP 10 national finalist awards, and an outstanding chapter team award at the national competition. Tomomi Miller (Commercial Baking) and Chris Castro (Culinary Arts) were advised by Joyce Woodard and Penny DeRose.
Chris Burns, Pat Martinez, and Anne Uhring received CNM's Spring 2008 Excellence Awards. Each went beyond the call of duty in performing her duties. Anne, an adjunct faculty member, chaired BIT's Earth Day Celebration and oversees BIT's Green Team.
Red or White? Chris Morosin recently earned his certification as an Executive Wine Sommelier from the International Wine Guild. Pairing food with complementary flavors, aromas, and textures found in wine is a nuanced art and a lifelong study of sommeliers. The sommelier's role encompasses all aspects of service with an enhanced focus on wines, beers, spirits, soft drinks, cocktails, mineral waters, and tobaccos.
Chuck Milazzo, part time faculty member, was recently awarded his doctoral degree in Management (Organizational Psychology). Great work, Chuck!
Laura Arguelles, Instructional Support Technician, received her Bachelor of Science degree in Technology & Training from UNM. Way to go, Laura!

Carmine Russo Named Chef of the Year
Congratulations to Chef Carmine Russo for being named Chef of the Year by the New Mexico Restaurant Association. The recipient of this highly-competitive award must contribute to the advancement and prestige of the foodservice industry, must be actively engaged and employed in the foodservice industry for a minimum of the past three consecutive years, and must be currently employed in the foodservice industry in New Mexico. Carmine's prestigious award—along with his experience and expertise—bring added awareness of the Culinary Arts program, BIT, and CNM.
Leigh Anne Chavez, J.D. - Participant in Companion Lecture Series
Leigh Anne Chavez recently participated in a recent companion series for Frankenstein: Penetrating the Secrets of Nature, a traveling exhibit from the National Library of Medicine® hosted by the UNM Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center. Building upon themes raised in the exhibit, the lecture series examined the role of the individual in society through the bioethical implications of scientific discovery, genetic information ownership, extending life, neurosystems engineering, and organ donation. Leigh Anne spoke on the topic "Boundary between Life and Death." The exhibit is housed at the UNM Domenici Center for Health Sciences Education through May and is open to the public Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Gayle McIntyre, Tutor
Congratulations to Gayle McIntyre for passing her Microsoft Office Specialist certificate exam for Word 2007. She received a second MCAS certification for PowerPoint 2997 in May. Gayle also completed the "Tools for Teaching" course facilitated by Organizational Learning.
Diane Paul, Faculty
Several students from Foothill High School within YDDC (Youth Diagnostic and Development Center) benefited from Diane's instruction in her Time Management and Business Interpersonal Skills distance learning courses. Thanks to Diane for her outreach in meeting the unique challenges of these students. In addition, Diane recently participated in a panel discussion at the New Mexico Higher Education Assessment and Retention Conference (NMHEAR) in February. Contact Diane to learn more about the panel's topic "Learning Activities to Increase Retention, Motivation, and Learning in Online Classes."
Norma Barney, Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP) Service Award
Recognized for outstanding service to the CNM AQIP Process, Norma created and developed CNM's AQIP website. This online presence helps in communicating CNM's commitment to continuous quality improvement and the College's accreditation process. Ms. Barney is a member of the Early Alert Intervention Team, one of the College's four AQIP current action plan teams.

BIT and CNM have been ably represented at the many regional and community outreach venues. Thanks goes to the BIT Directors of Instruction for facilitating these functions and communicating BIT's diverse programs to the many high school and middle school students who participated in these events.
