Location directions: We are at the corner of Eubank & Constitution. Take various roads east to Eubank. Go north on Eubank to Constitution. Go right (east) on Constitution. We are the driveway right after Carl's Jr.

Agency description/mission: Have you ever been homeless?  Do you know someone who has been homeless?  As a Service Learner at Barrett House you will meet women and children who find themselves homeless.  You may interact with the guests as a friendly listener, play with or read to the children, do guest intakes, and answer the phone and door, learning much about the needs of the community as well as the many services available to the homeless.  The Mission of the Barrett House is to provide emergency short-term housing up to at least three weeks and supportive services in a caring and compassionate manner to homeless women and children who are striving to break the cycle of homelessness.

Service Learning opportunities: TBA

Orientation/Training schedule: Initial meeting with program director to learn more about our mission and organization, then “on the job” training. We need 10 students.

Agency description/mission:  The Bernallillo County Family Literacy Program's mission is to provide a sustainable, free of charge one-on-one tutoring program for children. The goal of the Program is to raise the student's reading, writing, and spelling skills commensurate with their current grade level. The Family Literacy Program provides a community-based program, where Service Learning students and volunteer tutors work with elementary and middle school students. Students work with tutors for two hours per week to improve skills such as:  word recognition, reading comprehension, spelling, and writing. Since 1999, the Bernalillo County Family Literacy Program has assisted families with this vital service.

Orientation/Training schedule:  One training session for two (2) hours, call Judith Ann Garcia at Bernalillo County Family Literacy Program Parks and Recreation at 505-314-0496 for information on training dates, times, and locations. Service Learning and volunteer tutors are also provided with manuals and other resources and are supported by Literacy Assistants staffed at each center.

Special conditions or requirements:  Background checks required before working with children. Commitment of two hours per week for a minimum of one semester (Fall: September-December; Spring: January-May). Read with student, listen to the student read, practice spelling, implement lessons at the appropriate grade level and most important provide encouragement.

Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Central NM, Inc. (BBBS)

Location directions: Nearest cross streets are San Mateo and Menaul. Take San Mateo north one block past Menaul turn right going east on Phoenix. BB/BS is in the Phoenix Professional Building, across from the Queen of Heaven School.

Agency description/mission: The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters is to build a stronger community through the creation and support of positive one-to-one relationships between children and adult volunteers.  The Big Brothers Big Sisters school-based program matches children at risk for not succeeding in school with responsible, positive adults who will spend one hour a week in a safe, monitored and supervised environment at the school.

Service Learning opportunities:  Service learning students will have the opportunity to play an active role in the New Mexico Integrated Services in Schools Initiative (NMISSI). Based at a local middle school, the service learner will be responsible for developing and implementing after school programming that will engage students and their volunteer mentors. Programming should involve experiential learning and can be reoccurring activity through the semester. The project offers the opportunity to be a part of a dynamic team while gaining valuable work experience making a difference in the community.

Orientation/Training schedule: Scheduled on an as needed basis to accommodate our service learners. Our need for students is unlimited.

Special conditions or requirements: We perform a background check and ask for 4 references.
