Children's Grief Center of New Mexico
Location directions: We are located on the campus of Sunset Mesa School, on the northeast corner of Candelaria & Morris, between Eubank & Juan Tabo. If the front office is closed, please proceed straight through the main gate to the blue & tan Nambe building, where you will find the Children's Grief Center of New Mexico. Agency Description/Mission: Children's Grief Center of New Mexico is a safe place for children, teens, and adults to share feelings and experiences while grieving a death - through faciliatated peer support groups. Service Learning opportunities: There are many opportunities for service learning at the Children's Grief Center of New Mexico: (1) Provide support to children, teens, young adults, or thier caregivers who are grieving the death of someone they love; (2)Greet bereaved families and help them feel welcome, help to serve dinner and help to clean up after families go to their support group or help to care for infants and toddlers who are too young for support group; (3) Provide administrative support in our office and work on special projects that would help us better serve grieving children and their families; or (4) Work with CGC staff to create and complete a personalized project that is interesting, educational, and beneficial for everyone involved. Orientation/Training schedule: Our next Bereavement Support Group Facilitator training is scheduled for September 12 & 13, 2009 from 8:30am to 5:00pm both days. The deadline to register is September 10, 2009. All other training will take place at our office duuring a time that is convenient for you. Special conditions or requirements: A background check is necessary for anyone who will be working directly with children. Agency Description/Mission: Citizen Schools operates a national network of apprenticeship programs for middle school students, connecting adult volunteers to young people in hands-on learning projects. Service Learning opportunities: Apprenticeships Citizen Schools give volunteers the opportunity to take what they do best in their professional careers or personal pursuits and use it to help middle school students move to a long-term trajectory of success. In 90-minute classes one afternoon a week (Monday or Wednesday) for 13 weeks, these volunteer Citizen Teachers enable young people to learn real-world skills by creating real-world projects. Lawyers turn their apprentices into prosecutors, artists cultivate young muralists, and gardeners lead a team of twelve-year-old green thumbs. On the 11th week, apprentices will present a final product, presentation or performance called a WOW! Every WOW! showcases the students' learning for a public audience of family, school staff, and community leaders. Past WOW!s include a video on lead contamination, a prize-winning solar car, an arts festival, a naval warship design, a CD of local music, even a financial plan for a new business- all created by young people themselves. Location directions: We are located in the Galleria in downtown Albuquerque at the corner of 2nd Street and Copper. Agency Description/Mission: Serve constituents of Congressional District 1 with problems and concerns with government agencies, i.e. VA, Social Security, INS, and IRS. Students would participate in events planning and coordination as well as provide support to the Congressional Staff. Service Learning opportunities: Constituent services, research, customer service skills, understanding the needs/requests of people of New Mexico, community outreach, general office support, writing skills, and event planning. Orientation/Training schedule: The first few days will be “on the job” training as well as a one on one with supervisor. Special conditions or requirements: Good communication regarding work schedule as well as flexibility. Professional work environment. Number of Service-Learning Students Needed: Four Service Learning students Hours of operation when students are needed: Monday-Friday 8:30-5:30 Minimum hour commitment required: 8 hours per week for 2 ½ months (10 weeks) Creative Education Preparatory Institute #1 (CEPI #1) Charter High School
Location directions: We are located on Albuquerque's Westside on the NW corner of Montano and Taylor Ranch Road next to the Family Dollar. Agency description/mission: At CEPI #1, we provide a student-centered, multi-age educational environment maintaining high academic and successful career oriented standards. As computers are essential tools in almost every workplace, CEPI #1 prepares students for the future by providing significant exposure and training in advanced technologies through an interactive computer-based curriculum delivery system and technology applications lab. Service Learning opportunities: Our primary needs are for Service Learning students to mentor and tutor our students in any subjects including math, english, science, and social studies. Other opportunities include tutoring and assisting in our Reading, Technology Applications, and Science Labs. Service Learning students knowledgeable in various computer software programs including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint can offer tutoring and/or workshops to our students in these programs. Other opportunities available may be discussed with service learning student depending on student’s interest and course curriculum. Orientation/Training schedule: Individual or small group orientation to our school and school policies will be scheduled prior to or on student’s start date. Service Learning students will choose an area of interest and be matched with a teacher or staff member to complete service learning experience. Special conditions or requirements: Service Learning students are not to be left alone with our students or transport them for any reason. A CEPI #1 employee will need to be present at all times during interactions with students.

Agency description/mission: The mission of Cuidando Los Niños is to: * provide high quality early childhood development and therapeutic services that meet the special needs of children experiencing homelessness * support services that assist their families to become rehoused and stronger * be a community leader and advocate for social change necessary to break the cycle of homelessness. Opportunities: CLN has several ongoing opportunities. These opportunities are only available Monday through Friday. Most volunteers in these areas designate 2-6 hours a week to volunteer at our center.
Orientation/Training schedule: One hour orientation and training to be scheduled prior to beginning Service Learning hours. Training on basic guidelines for doing service learning at CLN with Community Outreach Specialist. Training on specific responsibility with Department Manager. Special conditions or requirements:
Number of Service-Learning Students Needed: Maximum of 14 Hours of operation when students are needed: Most Opportunities - 8:00 am-5:00 pm; Kitchen Support - 8:00 am-2:00 pm; Call for more specific information. Minimum commitment required: 2-6 hours/week; 15/semester |
