Agency Description/Mission: As a Camp Fire USA program Rocket Reader is founded on belief that today's kids are tomorrow's leaders. Because literacy is the foundation of all formal learning our primary goal is to help children achieve reading proficiency level by third grade, thus giving them the skills to become tomorrow's leaders.

Service Learning opportunities:  Rocket Reader currently operates in; three elementary schools: Montezuma, Oñate and Sierra Vista providing one-on-one reading help. Service Learner is matched with child for a 45 minute tutoring session during school day hours once or twice a week.

Orientation/Training schedule:  Two hour training and orientation.

Special conditions or requirements:  Prior to involvement: Application, interview, reference check/criminal background check.

Agency description/mission: Care Net Pregnancy Center of Albuquerque is an interdenominational Christian agency dedicated to helping women and girls facing unplanned pregnancies evaluate their options and plan for their future. Our services are free. Services include pregnancy tests, crisis and professional counseling, stage one pregnancy ultrasound, early pregnancy health assessments, referrals, prenatal and parenting education, clothing, baby items and diapers. We also offer support for those suffering the loss of a pregnancy or grieving an abortion choice.

Service Learning opportunities: Students are placed in a variety of positions. This year we have a new position for service learners. We prefer students in nursing or Sonography to fill the role of Ultrasound Assistant. Other students will do research, office, PR and event planning, or special projects. In some cases Service Learners work as receptionists or peer counselors. Extra qualifications and training are required for receptionists and peer counselors.

Orientation/Training Schedule: Every service learning planning to do Service Learning at a Care Net site needs to attend an orientation on Friday, September 15th at 3:00 pm in our Main Center at 9809 Candelaria NE #1-A. Bring your Service Learning Letter of Agreement & Enrollment form, your time sheet and the class syllabus.

Special conditions or requirements:  We require strict confidentiality and behavior that is non-offensive to our clients and volunteers. Students who work with clients must be over 18 years old and have views compatible with those of the center. Some positions require extra training.

Number of Service Learning Students Needed: 10 to 12

Hours of operation when students are needed: Hours vary with each site. Day times, evenings and weekends are available for some positions.

Minimum hour commitment required: 25 hours per semester. Shifts are 3 to 4 hours weekly.

Agency Description/Mission: Guided by faith and love, Catholic Charities provides help and creates hope by supporting families, fighting poverty, and building community. The education department assists adults to become literate and obtain knowledge and skills necessary for employment and self sufficiency.

Service Learning opportunities: Classroom assistants, tutors, peer mentors for ESL, GED and computer classes. Computer lab monitor.

Orientation/Training schedule: Upon completion of a volunteer application and reference check, an orientation will be scheduled with the volunteer tutor coordinator.

Special conditions or requirements: Students must have some basic computer skills and be fluent in English to assist in computer classes.  Students must be proficient in English to assist in English GED classes or fluent in Spanish to assist in Spanish GED classes.

Hours of operation when students are needed: Day, evening and Saturday hours available.

Minimum hour commitment required:  2 hours weekly for a total of 25 hours per semester.


Children's Grief Center of New Mexico

Location directions:  We are located on the north east corner of Candelaria and Morris. Our office is located in the Nambe building. Go through the double doors where you can let the school secretary know you are coming to the Children’s Grief Center of New Mexico.

Agency Description/Mission:  The mission of the Children's Grief Center of New Mexico is to provide a safe and supportive environment in which children, teens and their families can share experiences and feelings while grieving the death.

Our guiding principles:  *Grief is a natural reaction to death for children as well as for adults.

*Individuals have the natural capability to heal themselves.

*Grief is as unique and individual experience.

*Caring and acceptance help the healing process.

Service Learning opportunities:  Service learning students share their time and expertise by facilitating groups. Trained as a facilitator, you will help children and their caregivers move through the healing process. You will learn to understand the normal, human grief response to death and loss. Learn to recognize the need for grief support for children, teens and adults. Develop skills as a support group facilitator. Experience facilitating a support group.

Orientation/Training schedule:  Training is scheduled to accommodate the Children's Grief Center and the students.  Fifteen participants are required for a training to be scheduled.  The training is two consecutive Saturdays from 8:30 am-5:00 pm (lunch provided). The training hours count towards the student’s service learning commitment.

Special conditions or requirements:  Service learning students are required to commit from the time of training completion until May of 2008.  This is important for continuity in the group. We perform a DPS background check and ask for three references. Wait for at least one year since the loss of a significant person in the student’s life. Sign the commitment agreement.

Hours of operation when students are needed:  Each group must attend-from 5:15 pm-8:30 pm every other week. NE heights meets every other Tuesday. West Side groups meet every other Thursday. There is a winter break in December.

Service Learning opportunities:  To perform a wide variety of duties in support of assigned functions/departments; which may include, but are not limited to, assisting the arts program with artwork displays and Sunport serenades which features an array of local talent ranging from classical to mariachi to jazz to polka; assisting the Business Development and Planning Departments to provide services and amenities that satisfy the needs of the traveling public and the community develop; assisting the Facilities Management department with airport facilities, inputting correspondence and data into a computer terminal; and assisting with basic sorting, filing, copying and/or clerical accounting activities.

Special conditions or requirements:  Service Learning student must wear a badge and will be required to attend a Security Briefing/Ramp Driving Class, adhere to a background check, and have fingerprints taken prior to beginning work.

Agency Description/Mission:  To provide aid and assistance in mobilizing individuals and corporations, encouraging them to participate in volunteer activities throughout the City of Albuquerque.

Service Learning opportunities:  We need motivated individuals who want to work in a fast-paced office. Service Learning students will perform duties such as management of a database; preparation of large mail-outs; volunteer referrals; and placement of follow-up calls.

Location directions:  West on 528 (Alameda) past Intel. It curves north. Take a left on Southern. The office is in Rio Rancho City Hall on the left side of Southern Blvd.

Agency description/mission:  Serve constituents of Congressional District 3. Represent Congressman Udall at public events and issue briefings. Rio Rancho office provides case management services to facilitate constituent interactions with governmental agencies,  i.e., VA, Social Security, INS, and IRS.  The office staff is regularly involved in community events and outreach.

Service Learning opportunities:  Generate form letters to agencies for constituents from the Congressman. Answer phones and record opinions, write addresses to be read at events. Accompany Sarah Cobb to events and briefings--outreach in district.

Orientation/Training schedule:  The first few days will be "on the job" training.

Special conditions or requirements:  Need to be flexible from week to week as to whether we'll be in the office or out in the field on any given day. Student and supervisor need to communicate during the week about the schedule.

Agency description/mission:  Congressional office for New Mexico’s first district provides service to constituents regarding problems and concerns with government agencies. Students would also be involved with drafting letters on behalf of the Congresswoman. Students would participate in event planning. Event planning examples include constituent recognition such as student achievement, community good deeds, veteran services and community visits to schools, businesses, agencies, etc. Emphasis on service learning would be casework for individuals needing assistance. Students will use problem-solving skills creativity in finding solutions/options for constituents.

Service Learning opportunities:  Community outreach, writing skills, constituent services, research, front desk customer service skills, understanding of the needs/requests of people of the New Mexico, etc. Assignments vary based upon the students goals, skills and interest areas.

Orientation/Training schedule:  Each student has a one-one ratio with a supervisor.

Special conditions or requirements:  Flexibility a plus.

Hours of operation when students are needed:  8:00 am-6:00 pm Monday-Thursday, 8:00 am-5:00 pm on Friday.

Agency description/mission: The Creative Education Preparatory Institute #1 (CEPI #1) Charter High School is a public magnet school for students who wish to enroll.  It is the Institute’s mission to engage students and their families in learning experiences directed at gaining academic and social skills necessary for personal, social, and career success.

At CEPI #1, we provide a student-centered, multi-age educational environment maintaining high academic and successful career oriented standards.  As computers are essential tools in almost every workplace, CEPI #1 prepares students for the future by providing significant exposure and training in advanced technologies through an interactive computer-based curriculum delivery system and technology applications lab.  Our course offerings provide each student with a result oriented individualized program tailored to meet each student’s individual needs.

Service Learning opportunities:  Our primary needs are for Service Learning students to mentor and tutor our students in any subjects including Math, English, Science, and Social Studies. Other opportunities include tutoring and assisting in our Reading, Technology Applications, and Science Labs. Service Learning students knowledgeable in various computer software programs including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint can offer tutoring and/or workshops to our students so that they may utilize these programs more effectively in their coursework.

Orientation/Training schedule:  Individual or small group orientation to our school and school policies will be scheduled prior to or on student’s start date. Service Learning students will choose an area of interest and be matched with a teacher or staff member whom they can assist and from whom they can learn.

Special conditions or requirements:  Our students may look upon Service Learning students as role models.  Therefore, Service Learning students’ behaviors and manner of dress will need to reflect a professional bearing.  Service Learning students are also not to be left alone with our students or transport them for any reason.  A CEPI #1 employee will need to be present at all times during interactions with students.


Cuidando los Niños

Location directions: I-25 south go west on Lead (one way) turn left/south on Broadway and left at the light at Broadway and Pacific. Make an immediate left into the Saint Xavier church parking lot; proceed to the north end of the lot. After parking walk around the north end of the facility; use the main entrance, facing Broadway.

Agency description/mission:  The mission of Cuidando Los Ninõs is to provide childcare and therapeutic services that meet the special needs of homeless children and support services that assist homeless families in becoming rehoused and self-sufficient.

Service Learning opportunities:

  • Interacting with infants, toddlers or preschoolers in classroom and playground settings
  • Assisting teachers in program development using skills in music, art and language (Spanish)
  • Office support including filing and copying at the administration office
  • Culinary opportunities including preparation of menus, meals and miscellaneous kitchen duties
  • Public Relations work such as PSA development, press releases and public presentations

Orientation/Training schedule:  One hour orientation and training to be scheduled prior to beginning Service Learning hours.

Special conditions or requirements:

  • Only if working within the finance department students need Accounting 101, 102 and familiarity with Peachtree software.
  • All other departments have no special conditions or requirements but welcome bilingual students.

Number of Service-Learning Students Needed:  Maximum of 14

Hours of operation when students are needed:  8:00 am-noon and 2:00 pm-5:00 pm Monday-Friday; Thursdays from 5:00 pm-7:00 pm

Minimum commitment required:  2-4 hour blocks not to exceed 6 hours weekly.
