Location directions: On the West side of Wyoming Boulevard between Menaul and Indian School, in the Hel-Mar building. Agency description/mission: The Center works to reduce the social and economic impact of DWI through public awareness, education, prevention and research. The Center also provides assistance to victims and serves as a central clearinghouse of information on DWI and victim’s rights. Service Learning opportunities: Criminal Justice/Paralegal students interested in criminal law, DWI laws, NM Constitutional victims’ rights. Trains to Court Monitor and Case watch criminal Court proceedings as well as research cases. Communications, English students write articles of interest in our monthly newsletters or for the website. Statistical analysis, data cleanup to be used for mapping DWI arrest, crash and liquor locations. Math, Biology students review BAC testing techniques, ignition interlock usage and, Sociology and Psychology students to also learn dynamics of defendants and victims in the criminal justice system. Orientation/Training schedule: Two hour orientation for all service learners and bi-weekly meetings thereafter. Special conditions or requirements: Students must submit to an MVD background check and not have a criminal background. Hours of operation when students are needed: 8:00 am-5:00 pm Minimum hour commitment required: Weekly 2-3 hours; Semester 20-30 hours |
