Location Directions: Alamo is just south east of Yale just south of Gibson. From I 25 take the Gibson East exit. Turn right on Yale (2nd light). Turn left at Alamo (Village Inn). The first building on the right. Offices are in New Mexico Voices for Children, Suite 120.

Agency Description/ Mission:  Every Child Matters in New Mexico is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, non-partisan organization working to make children, youth, and families a national political priority. We promote the adoption of smart policies for children and youth, including:

  • Ensuring that children have access to affordable, comprehensive health care services
  • Expanding early-care and learning opportunities and after-school programs
  • Preventing violence against children in their homes and communities
  • Alleviating child poverty, and
  • Addressing the special needs of children with parents in prison.

Service Learning opportunities: Research children's issues in New Mexico and speak at events and meetings. Help raise awareness of children's issues. Assist with communications, media, candidate events, press conferences, and community organizing.

Help register people to vote at children and youth sites such as Head Start, child care centers, school parents nights, family events and fairs.

Help with "Get Out the Vote" (GOTV) efforts. Assist with applications for absentee ballots. Assist with filing and mailing absentee ballots during early voting. Making calls to remind voters to go to the polls. Help get voters to the polls.

Orientation/Training schedule:  Individual meetings with staff

Special conditions or requirements:  Self sufficient

Number of Service-Learning Students Needed: Open

Hours of operation when students are needed: Flexible

Minimum hour commitment required: 15 and up

Location Directions: East of Rio Grande on Mountain Road. Explora is across from Tiguex Park and near Old Town.

Agency Description/ Mission: Explora is a non-profit science center dedicated to creating opportunities for inspirational discovery and the joy of lifelong learning through interactive experiences in science, technology and art.

Service Learning opportunities: Opportunities are extensive and varied. They include the following subject areas: child development, elementary education, communication, psychology, biology, chemistry, physics, health sciences, trades and more.

Orientation/Training schedule:  A student would need to attend one of the two following orientations if they are interested in doing their service learning with EXPLORA!:

  • Saturday, January 19, 2008 from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

  • Friday, January 25, 2008 from 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm.

Special conditions or requirements:  Present course syllabus to agency supervisor

Number of Service-Learning Students Needed: Up to 20 Service Learners

Hours of operation when students are needed: Monday through Saturday 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. Sunday 12:00 noon to 6:00 pm

Minimum hour commitment required: Weekly 2 hours but no more than 6; Semester 30 hours


The Service Learning Program is a proud recipient of a Corporation for National and Community Service Grant. The program is also the 1999 National Bellwether award winner and the 2004 Community College National Center for Community Engagement Service Learning and Civic Engagement award winner.
