Location directions:  Located on the south side of the street, between 5th and 6th streets on Central Avenue in downtown Albuquerque.

Agency description/mission: 516 Arts is an independent, non-profit art space. We are a 5,500 square foot, two-story gallery that is a unique, hybrid venue somewhere between a gallery and a museum. The adventurous exhibitions program features high-caliber, content driven work through a series of collaborations with dozens of local art institutions.

Service Learning opportunities: Students will become leaders in our art education programs and assist in coordinating major events, i.e., poetry readings, musical performances, and openings. Students will be trained as docents to lead groups of K-12 school groups through exhibits. As a docent, you will learn to encourage, validate, and empower young students to form articulate opinions and explore the diversity of perspectives surrounding traditional, mainstream, and contemporary art.

Orientation/Training schedule:  Training will be scheduled on an individual basis. Students must be available to work on Tuesday through Friday mornings, as well as occasional weekend events.

Special conditions or requirements:  Must enjoy art and working with kids!

Number of service learning students needed:  3

Hours of operation when students are needed:  9:00 am-12:00 pm, Tuesday-Friday, occasional weekends

Minimum hour commitment required:  Weekly:  2; Semester:  15



The Service Learning Program is a proud recipient of a Corporation for National and Community Service Grant. The program is also the 1999 National Bellwether award winner and the 2004 Community College National Center for Community Engagement Service Learning and Civic Engagement award winner.
