Location directions: Near I-25 and Jefferson. Take Jefferson exit, take left on Jefferson, follow Jefferson for 0.9 miles, and then, take left into Jefferson Plaza to 4000 Jefferson Plaza on your left.

Agency description/mission: The Girl Scouts of Chaparral Council, Inc. provides a community-supported, responsive, developmental program of experiences for girls from ages 5 through 17, based on the Girl Scouts Promise and Law. Sustained by effective leadership, the council focuses on assisting each girl to grow strong. Girl scouting accomplishes this by providing girls the opportunity to develop their potential through enjoyable and challenging activities shared with peers in a supportive, all-girl setting.

Service Learning opportunities: Students are needed to:

  1. Plan, organize and deliver Girl Scouts program activities ranging from science to sports and leadership programs in community center and school settings.
  2. Plan, coordinate and implement program opportunities ranging from smaller workshops to large special events. Students can develop team building, organization and planning, budgeting, marketing and customer service skills. We will work with students to identify their area for best growth. The number of students is opened.
  3. Assist in the planning of special projects in the following departments of the agency:  program, diversity, retail, etc.
  4. Serve as a science and technology mentor and assist girls with robotics program (training available).
  5. Assist in retail store inventory (End of September only).
  6. Assist in rebuilding wagons, grading roads, and other construction projects at our camp in the Jemez Mountains (off season).

Orientation/Training schedule: Determined and scheduled to meet students’ needs.

Special conditions or requirements: Reliable transportation

Hours of operation when students are needed: Monday-Thursday 8:30 am-5:30 pm, Fridays 8:00 am-12:00 noon.

Minimum hour requirement: 25 hours per semester

Location directions:  From CNM main campus: Take Coal (one-way), continue on Zuni, turn left onto San Mateo, go 4 blocks past Central, turn left on Roma (before Lomas) Park. From I-40, exit south on San Mateo, slow down after the intersection at Lomas and take the first street on the right. Park. We are in the only 6 store building on Roma.

Agency description/mission: The mission of the Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society is to share God's love in word and deed by providing shelter and supportive services to older persons and others in need, believing that "In Christ's Love Everyone is Someone."

Service Learning opportunities:

  • Administrative Assistant:  assisting administration with duties such as filing, typing and answering phone.
  • Nursing:  to assist nursing department with tasks such as passing out water, making beds, etc.
  • Recreation therapy:  plan and perform recreation therapy services for elder persons.
  • Special Events:  to help plan, organize and put on events for elder persons.

Orientation/Training schedule:  Service Learning students will be required to attend an hour long orientation scheduled upon appointment. Please call Marta Del Rio to set an appointment for orientation.

Special conditions or requirements:  Students must be out-going, kind and patient. Long-term experience not required. Students with a criminal back ground will not be accepted. Please call Marta Del Rio for more information.

Number of Service-Learning Students Needed: Four (4)

Hours of operation when students are needed: Monday-Friday 8:00 am-5:00 pm. Once established, possible specific weekend opportunities

Agency description/mission:  The Good Samaritan motto is "In Christ's Love, Everyone is Someone." We are open to people of all faiths. Our Wellness Programs accommodate from young adults to elder seniors who are new to exercise or returning from a sedentary lifestyle. We welcome any level of participation, as appropriate to each person. Our instructors are trained to adapt and individualize every aspect of the Fitness classes. The programs also include preventative health education through workshops and special events.

Service Learning opportunities: There are several types of opportunities, ranging from one-time health fairs and monthly fundraisers or fitness assessments to on-going assistance with weekly classes, to communications and graphics projects which help maintain the three programs. There is a possibility to participate in our public Wellness Classes, as a fringe benefit.

Orientation/Training schedule:  Flexible

Special conditions or requirements:  Respect and caring for people of all ages. Bright-minded attention to detail. Sense of humor, a plus.

Number of Service-Learning Students Needed:  Up to five

Hours of operation when students are needed: Between 9 am-7 pm Monday -Friday; 10:00 am-4:00 pm Saturday

Minimum hour commitment required: Weekly 2 hours; Semester 40 hours

Agency description/mission:  Habitat for Humanity - builds community - one home, one family at a time.

Service Learning opportunities:  Non profit organization project implementation and business management, construction of homes, bookkeeping, communications, office support, public outreach, translation of documents (Spanish), spreadsheet development, data entry, web site updating, and leadership actions in the community.

Orientation/Training schedule:  One on one orientation and training will be provided to each selected student by the respective Department Head.

Special conditions or requirements:  Ability to learn by doing activities with mentor. Ability to support the success of Service Learning students and volunteers along with a positive "can-do" attitude.

Number of Service-Learning Students Needed:  10-12

Hours of operation when students are needed:  8:30 am-4:30 pm (and depending on project/assignment), REDCPA box office and theatres have flexible hours.

Minimum hour commitment required:  Weekly: depends on project/assignment; Semester: 50 hours

Agency description/mission:  ReStore is a building materials thrift store, selling donated new and used material to the general public. All proceeds benefit Albuquerque Habitat for Humanity. Habitat builds decent simple houses for low income families. Each family contributes 500 hours sweat equity and pays for the home with a no-interest loan

Service Learning opportunities:

  • Design and administer customer survey
  • Develop recycling resource/site list
  • Explore dumping issue - propose action
  • Develop flyer and distribute
  • Shelf/rack construction
  • Test appliances

Orientation/Training schedule: To be determined.

Special conditions or requirements:  Ability to learn by doing activities with mentor. Ability to support the success of Service Learning students and volunteers along with a positive "can-do" attitude.

Number of Service-Learning Students Needed:  3

Hours of operation when students are needed: Wednesday-Friday 10:00 am-6:00 pm. Saturday 10:00 am-5:00 pm

Minimum hour commitment required: 25 hours
