Turn left onto Monroe Agency description/mission: .The mission of the Red Cross is to provide relief to disasters and help people prepare for, prevent and respond to emergencies. This is accomplished through a variety of programs and services including Emergency/Disaster Services, Health & Safety Services, Volunteer Services and Minor Home Repair. We have Service Learning opportunities in all these services as well as special projects that will enhance our services and efficiency. Service Learning opportunities: We have many possibilities within the Albuquerque office that would enhance a variety of college courses and degree majors. Time commitments and schedules vary depending on the specific position. Some examples of opportunities include: - Create brochures for volunteer services and health and safety services – may be 15 hour projects
- Learn to do data entry in Disaster Services, Health & Safety Services and Volunteer Services – on going, flexible schedules
- Update and develop a Community Resource and Referral Book
- Learn to be a “Be Red Cross Ready” facilitator and make presentations – other topics also available
- Become a CPR/First Aid Instructor (a two semester commitment)
- Be an “office manager” in Health & Safety Services or Disaster Services and do a variety of tasks including scheduling classes, monitoring inventory, tracking instructors/students and cases
- Communications specialist – write and distribute press releases on various topics
- Auto-cad student to redesign some office space and organize the changes
- Historian – compile scrapbooks of the history and activities of the Mid-Rio Grande Chapter
Orientation/Training schedule: All volunteers must attend a “New Volunteer Orientation” (one is actually scheduled for 9/24, 6-8 PM), on the job training for all positions and some specialized training for certain positions depending on the number of hours the student can commit to. Special conditions: Background check conducted for all volunteers, most positions within the office require business casual attire. Special conditions or requirements: Up to 7 Number of service learning students needed: Office is open Monday – Friday, 8 AM – 5 PM, some positions may utilize volunteers at other times if there is capability on the students’ part. Minimum hour commitment required: Depends on position desired, most would require 2-3 hours weekly for duration of semester or longer. |
