Agency Mission: To provide support and advocacy to survivors of sexual assault and abuse within the greater Albuquerque area, and to serve as a community resource on issues regarding prevention and awareness of sexual violence.

  • In order to serve the diverse needs of Albuquerque and surrounding communities, we will:
    • Take action against sexual violence by challenging all forms of oppression and promoting social justice.
    • Create a work culture that is supporting, caring, honest, safe, accessible, and which promotes trust and open communication.
    • Promote self-renewal and healing for anyone affected by sexual assault.


Service Learning opportunities: Students will have the opportunity to work one on one with adult survivors of sexual assault. Students provide support to survivors and their families at the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner's Unit (SANE) and area hospitals. Students also have the opportunity to provide support via telephone on our 24-hour hotline to anyone affected by sexual violence.

Orientation/Training schedule: A forty-hour training is required for all students before their 25 Service Learning hours start. Detailed schedule provided upon acceptance into program.

Special conditions or requirements:

  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Must be willing to work with diverse populations
  • No violent criminal history
  • Must be willing to commit to six months of service

Location directions: Closest intersection is Yale and Gibson. Travel south on Yale.  Make second left onto Renard Pl. SE (just before the Waffle House Restaurant).  Bear right at fork onto Baylor Dr. SE. Follow Baylor Dr. until it ends. Turn West towards the bus company.  You will see a large warehouse with a roadrunner painted on it. The front door is on the west side of the building.

Agency Description/Mission: Roadrunner Food Bank solicits, collects and transports salvageable food from large and small food industry donors nationwide as well as making many purchases in bulk.  We then distribute millions of pounds of food each year through a statewide network of emergency food pantries, group homes, low-income day care centers, shelters, soup kitchens and seven smaller regional food banks. Our mission:  Fighting to End Hunger in New Mexico.

Service Learning opportunities: Service Learning opportunities fall within these general categories:

  • Receiving and Sorting Incoming Product and distribution to correct location (back stock)
  • Rotating and Arranging Product - dry, produce, dairy and frozen (line stock)
  • Familiarizing self with Computer Based Inventory Program - pulling orders, weighing and verifying orders, counting product, updating ULO & NIS list, receiving community donations (inventory management)
  • Building Maintenance and Security
  • Fleet Management
  • Interacting with Customers - local agencies and subsidiary distribution organizations (agency relations) and Donors (donor relations)
  • Recruiting, Scheduling and Training Volunteers - to include special populations
  • Coordinating with Warehouse Manager (and other staff) to identify volunteer tasks
  • Recruiting groups to participate in Hunger 101 and adapting curriculum as needed (program development)
  • Networking with other non-profit agencies involved in hunger relief
  • Participating in the planning, organization an "delivering" of special events (fund raising)
  • Special duties as assigned
Note: Not all students will have the opportunity to participate in the listed activities

Special conditions or requirements: Student needs to be aware of their physical limitations as many positions require turning and lifting.

Hours of operation when students are needed: Primarily from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday. Limited evenings and weekends available for part of placement.

Minimum hour commitment: 25 hours



The Service Learning Program is a proud recipient of a Corporation for National and Community Service Grant. The program is also the 1999 National Bellwether award winner and the 2004 Community College National Center for Community Engagement Service Learning and Civic Engagement award winner.
