Location directions:  Our animals are at our field site.  The animal care, health, and maintenance program happens, they are.  It is located off of south 217, in between Tijeras and Edgewood. These are the directions when leaving Albuquerque on I-40 heading east:  Take I-40 east to exit #181; head east on Route 66 also called Highway 333; head south on Route 217 win Highway 333 intersect route to 217 continue south on Route 217 about 3-4 miles until it intersects Juan Thomas Rd; head west on Juan Tomas Rd until it intersects Young Rd and continue until reaching #55; look for “Rancho Translyvania, New Mexico Bat Research Institute” sign.

Agency description/mission:  To elevate youth to become effective advocates and ethical stewards of themselves, wildlife, and the environment. To raise future generations of environmental leaders through nature.

Service Learning Opportunities:  Sites and opportunities vary. They include, but are not limited to, the following:  Animal care, health, and maintenance for collection of non-releaseable animals of hawks, falcons, owls, corvids, parrots, reptiles, fruit bats, insect bats, vampire bats, and rescued farm animals of chickens, horses, goats, pigs, and donkeys. Public speaking opportunities delivering presentations and field trips using interpretive discussion points.

Teaching experience opportunities in delivering curriculum to elementary, middle, and high schools. These are both science-based, and prevention-based curriculums. Animal rehabilitation opportunities. Gardening and landscape activities. Construction tasks building bird containment, boxing, and perching areas. Scratch n' Dent opportunities that develop problem solving, diagnostic techniques to repair and restore miscellaneous items.

Business management opportunities in our local Thrift Store. Marketing, fund raising, and advertisement opportunities for new product and program implementation.

Orientation/Training schedule:  20-40 hours depending upon opportunity selected.

Special conditions or requirements:  Eighteen years or older. Able to function under hot or cold temp and humidity regimes. Able to lift 25 #s without worry and injury. Work with youth requires criminal background check.

Hours of operation when students are needed:  9:00 am-5:00 pm

Minimum hour commitment:  Weekly:  Varies with opportunity selected; Semester: 40

Location directions: Therapeutic Recreation Program administrative office is located at Loma Linda Community Center, 1700 Yale Blvd. SE.  We are on Yale between Avenida Cesar Chavez and Gibson on the east side of Yale; a brown brick building with blue windows.  We provide programming to children, teens and adults at different locations throughout the metro area.

Agency description/mission: Therapeutic Recreation Programs provides persons with mental, physical, social and emotional disabilities and persons without disabilities opportunities to participate in appropriately selected recreation experiences.  Activities are designed to enhance growth and development, encourage participating in a least restrictive environment, enable leisure participation year round in facilities throughout Albuquerque.  We serve ages 6 - adult.

Service Learning Opportunities: Service Learning Program students will assist in the actual implementation of programs.  Placement is available at a variety of programs.  The students will get experience working with persons with disabilities in fully inclusive programs.  Students will have the opportunity to learn about community recreation programs.

Orientation/Training schedule: Orientation will take place on-site, scheduled before first day of service.

Special conditions or requirements: None

Hours of operation when students are needed: Varies with programs. Schedule includes:

M-F 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Fridays 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Saturdays 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm
Other days/times as needed by programs.

Minimum hour commitment: 25 hours



The Service Learning Program is a proud recipient of a Corporation for National and Community Service Grant. The program is also the 1999 National Bellwether award winner and the 2004 Community College National Center for Community Engagement Service Learning and Civic Engagement award winner.
