Agency description/mission: 60% of us will need blood at some point in our life due to accident or illness. Less than 6% of eligible donors actually donate blood. To provide a safe and adequate supply of blood to patients, in New Mexico and the Four Corners Area, United Blood Services must recruit 250 people to donate blood every day. Volunteer coordinators are needed to plan, organize and implement campus blood drives. This program is hands-on, and students will gain many skills including: public speaking., working with the media, prioritizing, developing promotional materials, and educating the community about the local blood program.

Service Learning Opportunity: TBA

Orientation/Training schedule: Training Prior to assignment

Special conditions or requirements: Good organizational skills, detail-oriented, and public speaking skills.

Hours of operation when students are needed: Flexible

Minimum hour commitment required: 20 hours



The Service Learning Program is a proud recipient of a Corporation for National and Community Service Grant. The program is also the 1999 National Bellwether award winner and the 2004 Community College National Center for Community Engagement Service Learning and Civic Engagement award winner.
