Location directions: From I-40, exit on 4th Street. Travel north on 4th Street pass Griegos, shopping center on west side of 4th street just north of Garcia's Kitchen.

Agency description/mission: To provide mentors to children in need of a positive role model in their life. Mentors play games, outdoor activities, read, arts and crafts projects, etc. (all provided by the program) Mentors also assist children with basic tutoring. Mentors are special people who believe in making our community a better place - one child at a time!

Service Learning opportunities: Students will benefit from the mentoring program by gaining insight on many different issues facing today's youth. Students will have direct help from teachers, counselors, social workers and YDI staff to help make their mentoring experience as educational as possible. Students will also be given the opportunity to attend additional training sessions related to mentoring.

Orientation/Training schedule: All service learners and volunteers are given a two hour training to discuss program policies and boundaries. Training will also focus on communication skills, relationship growth, issues - how to deal with certain issues that may arise. Also, service learners and volunteers are invited to monthly round table sessions for further training such topics as peer pressure, bullying, etc. Additional training occurs on an as needed basis.

Special conditions or requirements: Service Learners must make a one school year commitment with the program. They must be committed to the relationship and consistent with their mentoring meetings. Service learners must have their own transportation, and must be able to pass an extensive background investigation, including fingerprinting on both the state and federal levels (paid for by YDI).

Number of Service-Learning Students Needed: Unlimited

Hours of operation when students are needed: Monday through Friday - flexible during school day hours

Minimum hour commitment required: One (1) hour per week for one school year



The Service Learning Program is a proud recipient of a Corporation for National and Community Service Grant. The program is also the 1999 National Bellwether award winner and the 2004 Community College National Center for Community Engagement Service Learning and Civic Engagement award winner.
