CHSS Degrees & Certificates



The School of Communication, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CHSS) offers Associate of Arts (AA) degrees in Fine Arts, Education, Liberal Arts, and General Studies. 

CHSS offers a Certificate in General Education and offers an Alternative Teacher Licensure program. Finally, CHSS offers classes that support occupational degrees and certificate programs.

Associate of Art Degrees:

Child, Youth & Family Development Degree:  (see 2007-2009 Course Catalog Pages 99-102) The program facilitates the learning of theory and competencies required to work in specific child and family settings. 

Child Development Associate (CDA) provides the preparatory classroom and field experience work for students to successfully take the credential assessment administered by the Council for Early Childhood Professional Recognition.

• Early Childhood Multicultural Education is designed for people who want to work in this field and/or complete a bachelor’s degree leading to teacher certification K-3.

Family Studies focuses on learning about children’s development from infancy to adolescence and the dynamics of family interactions.

Fine Arts Degree: This degree provides experience and training in the areas of Art Studio and Art History and for transfer purposes, covers the curriculum of the first two years of a baccalaureate in art study.  The program includes both classroom and studio instruction.  The program offers two concentrations:

• Art History

• Art Studio

Elementary Education Degree: This program facilitates the learning of theory and skills required for working with children in the public school system in K-8. This program includes classroom instruction and practical experience within the Albuquerque Public School System (APS).  There are three concentrations:

• Bilingual education

• Elementary education

• Special education

General Studies Degree: (See 2007-2009 Course Catalog, pages 177-178) This program includes the general education curriculum of the first two years of baccalaureate study.  It is designed to fulfill the New Mexico Department of Higher Education “Common Core” Requirements.

Liberal Arts Degree:  (See 2007-2009 Course Catalog, pages 201-202) This program includes the general education curriculum of the first two years of baccalaureate study.  It is designed to fulfill the New Mexico Department of Higher Education “Common Core” Requirements.  The AA in Liberal Arts is designed to accommodate diverse educational interests.

Alternative Licensure Program:

Alternative Licensure Program: CNM offers state-approved Alternative Teacher Licensure Program in:

• Early Childhood Multicultural Education

• Elementary Education

• Secondary Education

• Special Education

Certificate:

General Education Certificate:  This subset of the General Studies degree is designed to fulfill the New Mexico Department of Higher Education "Common Core" requirements for a baccalaureate degree.~
