CHSS Degrees & Certificates



The School of Communication, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CHSS) offers Associate of Arts (AA) degrees in Fine Arts, Education, Liberal Arts, and General Studies. 

CHSS offers a Certificate in General Education, Child Development, and Educational Paraprofessional and offers an Alternative Teacher Licensure certificate program. Finally, CHSS offers classes that support occupational degrees and certificate programs.

Associate of Art Degrees:

Child, Youth & Family Development Degree:  The program facilitates the learning of theory and competencies required to work in specific child and family settings. 

• Social Work is designed for people who want to work in this field and intend to complete a bachelor’s degree in social work.

Family Studies focuses on learning about children’s development from infancy to adolescence and the dynamics of family interactions.

Fine Arts Degree: This degree provides experience and training in the areas of Art Studio and Art History and for transfer purposes, covers the curriculum of the first two years of a baccalaureate in art study.  The program includes both classroom and studio instruction.  The program offers two concentrations:

• Art History

• Art Studio

Early Childhood Multicultural Education Degree: This program facilitates the learning of theory and skills required for working with children birth-3rd grade. There are three concentrations:

• Birth-3rd Grade Teacher

• Early Childhood Administrator

• Family, Infant, Toddler

General Studies Degree: (See 2007-2009 Course Catalog, pages 177-178) This program includes the general education curriculum of the first two years of baccalaureate study.  It is designed to fulfill the New Mexico Department of Higher Education “Common Core” Requirements.

Liberal Arts Degree:  (See 2007-2009 Course Catalog, pages 201-202) This program includes the general education curriculum of the first two years of baccalaureate study.  It is designed to fulfill the New Mexico Department of Higher Education “Common Core” Requirements.  The AA in Liberal Arts is designed to accommodate diverse educational interests.

Teacher Education Degree:  This program offers four concentrations in career and technical education, elementary education, bilingual elementary education, secondary education, and special education.  The AA in Teacher Education is designed for transfer to a bachelor's degree in education.

Alternative Licensure Program:

Alternative Teacher Licensure: CNM offers state-approved Alternative Teacher Licensure Program in:

• Early Childhood Multicultural Education

• Elementary Education

• Secondary Education

• Special Education

Certificate:

General Education Certificate:  This subset of the General Studies degree is designed to fulfill the New Mexico Department of Higher Education "Common Core" requirements for a baccalaureate degree.~
