The Liberal Arts Degree Program

Welcome to the liberal arts information page.  The term “liberal arts” is a general term that refers to academic courses in humanities, social sciences, mathematics, and science.  Whether history or English, psychology or Spanish, chemistry or drawing, you will find these and many more disciplines in the liberal arts curriculum.

The Liberal Arts Associate of Arts degree is both a stand-alone degree and a transfer degree.  It includes the general education courses approved for all colleges and universities in New Mexico (a 35-hour block), and it covers the first two years of study that lead to baccalaureate degrees.  In addition, the liberal arts curriculum supports many other program requirements in other CNM academic schools.  The General Honors program is part of the liberal arts curriculum and has its own set of requirements.  The liberal arts curriculum offers several types of instruction, from the typical classroom to studio to laboratory.

Students completed the AA degree in Liberal Arts must complete a certain number of hours in each discipline.  There are also three specific requirements for the degree:  English 1102 (which has a pre-requisite of English 1101), one Communication course (either COMM 1130 or COMM 2221), and any Math course with a pre-requisite of MATH 1210 or higher.  In the area of “applied arts,” this term means any Art Studio course or one of three Theatre courses:  THEA 1120, THEA 1121, or THEA 1122.  The term-by-term list  will show the recommended sequence of courses for the AA degree in Liberal Arts.
