CST 1150 Introduction to Cultural Studies:
This course covers a broad range of contemporary topics in global perspective. Students will explore non-dominant cultures and non-traditional social issues. Topics include gender, race, class, and ethnicity. (offered every term)
CST 2250A Introduction to African American Studies:
Designed to familiarize students with the African American experience, this course surveys the historical African cultures and the economic, political, sociological, historical, literary, and philosophical conditions which have shaped the lives of persons of African descent living in the United States. Topics include ancient civilizations; the institution of enslavement; abolition movements; Black inventors, scientists, soldiers, and pioneers; civil rights movements; religion; the arts; and challenges and opportunities in the ongoing evolution of cultural diversity. CST 2250H Introduction to Chicano Studies:
This course, designed to familiarize students with the Chicano experience, investigates the historical and social conditions which have shaped and affected the lives of a group of people, most of whom live in the southwestern United States. Topics covered in this class include Aztec civilization and culture, European colonization of Mexico, the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo, and historical and contemporary Chicano migrations and political movements. The course emphasizes how Chicanos create a mosaic of philosophy, art, and identity, and includes present-day perspectives. (offered every term)
CST 2250N Introduction to Native American Studies:
This course is designed to familiarize students with Native American experience. It investigates the historical and social conditions which have shaped and affected the lives of peoples indigenous to the Americas. Topics covered in this class include Native American civilization, European colonization of the Americas, treaties, and historical and contemporary Native American migrations and political movements, all emphasizing how Native Americans create an indigenous mosaic of philosophy, art, and identity, while providing present-day perspectives. CST 2250S Introduction to Asian Studies:
Investigating the historical and social conditions which have affected Asian American culture, this course surveys the economics, politics, sociologies, histories, literatures, and philosophies shaping the lives of Asian Americans. Topics include first-, second-, and third-generation immigrants and the “model” minority myth; images of Asian Americans in film and literature; conflict and perspectives between Asian Americans and other non-dominant groups; prejudice among various Asian Americans, from historical and present-day perspectives. CST 2265 Introduction to Women's Studies:
Provides an introduction to the study of women's issues by examining the diversity of women's lives in the United States within a global context. Content will include topics such as race, ethnicity, class, age, disability, sex, women's work, women's health and women and crime.
