Resources for Faculty Members interested in teaching Distance Learning Courses.

"I'm interested in teaching distance learning course.  What do I do?"

Step 1: Determine if online teaching is for you.

Take the following assessment survey to see if online teaching is for you:  Is online teaching for me?

Next, review the following articles that explain some of the motivating factors, incentives and obstacles faculty members face when they teach online:Parker, A. (2003b). Motivation and incentives for distance faculty. Online Journal of Distance Learning Administration, 6(3).  Retrieved September 14, 2005, from http://www.westga.edu/~distance/ojdla/fall63/parker63.htm.Rockwell, S. K., Schauer, J., Fritz, S. and Marx, D. (1999). Incentives and obstacles influencing higher education faculty and administrators to teach via distance. Online Journal of Distance Learning Administration 2(4). Retrieved February 3, 2006, from http://www.westga.edu/~distance/rockwell24.html.

Step 2: Get approval from your Division.

Each Division has different requirements for teaching online courses.  First, check with your Division about what is required on the Divisional level for you to teach an online course.  Checking in with your Division is always the first step.

Step 3: Take the Online Instructor Certification (OIC)  course.

After you have secured your department's approval to teach a course online, your next step is to complete the Online Instructor Certification (OIC) course.  By completing the OIC course, you will received the required training need to be certified to teach online at CNM.  For more information on this course, please contact Xeturah Woodley, Director of Distance Learning.

Step 4: Request a course for any new course shells.

Submit a completed Course Request Form.

Step 5: Design your course and "pilot test" it.

Your next step will be to design your course for online delivery.  A great place to start course design is to contact Patricia Vigil , Distance Learning Specialist.  Patricia can help you as you develop, design and instruct your course.  Here are a couple of good resources to help you in your design process.
