The ESL (English as a Second Language) and ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Program at CNM provides high-quality classroom English language instruction to students from Asia, The Americas, Africa, and Europe.
The ESL program offers free 15-week and 7.5-week classes; it serves adults of all ages who would like to improve their proficiency in English for professional, academic, and personal reasons. Students study reading, writing, speaking, and listening in a comfortable and relaxed environment. Our program serves over 1400 students a year with five (5) levels of English classes, plus classes in U.S. Citizenship and Special Topics.
Students learn about culture in the United States while acquiring the language and self-confidence to handle challenges that arise in daily life. Our instructors are qualified ESL professionals who use innovative methodologies and technology.
The ESOL program offers English language courses to students who are working toward a degree or certificate. The courses focus on helping students improve their skills for college success.
Courses are offered at our four (4) campuses: Main Campus (224-4282), Joseph Montoya Campus (224-5993), Westside Campus (224-4282), and South Valley Campus (224-5000).
Below are ESL and ESOL course descriptions:
ESL 0250 - ESL Workshop: Introduces alphabet, phonemic system, basic vocabulary and simple sentences in meaningful, communicative contexts. For students who have had no previous exposure to written or spoken English.
ESL 0350 - Beginning ESL: Develops English language skills with an emphasis on pronunciation practice, listening comprehension, conversation and basic grammar.
ESL 0450 - Low Intermediate ESL: Focuses on practice in communication skills for everyday life, which may include voicing opinions and responding appropriately in conversations on familiar topics, discussing short reading selections, learning and reviewing grammatical skills and conventions or oral and written English.
ESL 0550 - High Intermediate ESL: Expands focus on practice in communication skills for everyday life, which may include voicing opinions and responding appropriately in conversations on familiar topics, discussing short reading selections, learning and reviewing grammatical skills and conventions of oral and written English.
ESL 0650 - Low Advanced ESL: Covers English conversation, writing reading and evaluation of materials and study of advanced grammar in meaningful, communicative contexts.
ESL 0505 - ESL Learning Center: Individualized study and tutoring in English as a Second Language, with access to computer, video and audio programs and other instructional materials in Adult Education Learning Centers at the Main, Montoya or South Valley Westside campuses.
ESL 0500 - ESL Integrated: Presents reading, writing, listening, speaking and grammatical skills through group work, paired practice and self-paced instruction. Comprehensive, community-based classes for students at all levels of English proficiency. (This course is taught at community-based sites and campuses.)

ESL 0600 - Citizenship: (Pre- and Co-requisite: High Intermediate ESL level, ESL 0550) Covers basic English, American history and government. For students who have a working knowledge of English and are preparing to become American citizens.
ESOL 0550 - ESOL for College Success: (Pre-requisite: Low Advanced ESL level, ESL 0650, and Accuplacer test score) Designed for students who are planning to work toward a degree or certificate. Focuses on helping students improve reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. Emphasis is on English used in college.
