Waitlist Questions & Answers

What is a Waitlist?

A computerized function that allows students to place themselves on a Registration Waitlist when a class enrollment is full. If you are on a Waitlist and a space opens, you will be notified through your myCNM email. Or, you can check to see if the option "Registered" is available, by clicking the drop down menu, under the Action column next to the class, from the Add/Drop class's screen. You will then be able to register for the class within the allotted time displayed on your email notification. Note: The waitlisted student is strongly encouraged to check his/her myCNM email account daily. The waitlist system operates 24/7, including weekends and holidays.

Do all classes have a Waitlist?

No. Classes with special enrollment restrictions will not have waitlists.

How will I know if a class has a Waitlist?

A positive number will appear under the columns WL Cap (Waitlist Capacity), WL Act (Waitlist Actual) and WL Rem (WL Remaining) in the Search for Open Classes form in the Registration system. If there are zeros in these columns, the class does not have a waitlist.

What should I do if the class has a long Waitlist?

Place yourself on the waitlist. Each academic school closely monitors the waitlists and will notify you if a new section can be opened.

How do I put myself on a Waitlist?

Putting yourself on waitlist does not guarantee a new section of the class will be created, registration in a class, and does not waive a course prerequisite or co-requisite.

If there is a C under the select column then:

          1. From "Search for Open Classes", if the class is full and there is a Waitlist available, write down the CRN number.
          2. Click on "Add/Drop Classes" at the bottom of the form
          3. Enter the CRN for the Waitlist class
          4. Click "Submit Changes"
          5. A "Registration Add Errors" message will appear
          6. From the drop down menu in the Action column for the class, choose: "Waitlisted"
          7. Click on "Submit Changes"
          8. Verify your Waitlist status under Status in your add/drop classes form

If there is an open box under the select column then:

                      1. From "Search for Open Classes" screen, click the open box under the select column
                      2. Click on "Register" at the bottom of the form
                      3. A "Registration Add Errors" message will appear
                      4. From the drop down menu in the action box for the class, choose Waitlisted
                      5. Click on "Submit Changes"
                      6. Verify your Waitlist Status under Status in your Add/Drop classes form.

I followed the instructions above and the computer won't let me put myself on a Waitlist. What happened?

A Registration Add Error Message will be displayed that specifically indicates the reason you cannot put yourself on the Waitlist. Ex.: the Waitlist may be full; you may not have met the requirements, etc.

How will I know my position on the Waitlist?

Go to the registration menu and click on "Your Class Schedule". Your position number will be indicated next to the waitlist position on the "Your Class Schedule" form

Once a seat becomes available, will I be registered for the class?

No. You will be notified through your myCNM email. It is your responsibility to register for the class within the time allotted in your myCNM email . (See Waitlist Deadlines for Fall, Spring or Summer term). Or, you can check to see if the option "Registered" is available, by clicking the drop down menu, under the Action column next to the class, from the Add/Drop classes screen.

If the student does not register for the class within the time allotted in the email notification, he/she will be removed from the Waitlist. The Waitlist system operates 24/7, including weekends and holidays. Also, you are responsible for dropping any unneeded Waitlisted courses that you are on.

Why was my name removed from the Waitlist?

                          1. Your Waitlist notification may have expired because you didn't register for the course within the time allotted in your myCNM email.
                          2. Registration Waitlists will be turned off two days before every part of term begins in which the class is offered (see Waitlist Deadlines for Fall, Spring or Summer term). This means a student will not be able to Waitlist a course for that part of term.

How do I register for a class when I receive email notification that a space is available?

                          1. Go to "Add/Drop Classes"
                          2. From the drop down menu under the Action column next to the class, choose "Registered"
                          3. Click on "Submit Changes"

How do I remove myself from a Waitlist?

                          1. Go to "Add/Drop Classes" screen from the Registration menu.
                          2. From the drop down menu under the Action column next to the class, choose "Dropped Course"
                          3. Click on "Submit Changes"

Can I be on a Waitlist for more than one section of the same class?

                          Yes.

Can I be on a Waitlist for a class that has a time conflict with another class that I am currently registered in?

Yes. However, you will be unable to register for the course due to the time conflict.

Can I be on a Waitlist for a class in which I have not met the pre-requisite, corequisite, or other registration restriction?

No. Prerequisites, corequisites, and repeat limits will be checked.

Once I register, am I done?

As a courtesy to other waitlisted students, drop yourself from all unneeded waitlists.

What if I am still on the Waitlist when the class starts?

Registration Waitlists will be turned off two days before every part of term begins in which the class is offered (see Waitlist Deadlines for Fall, Spring or Summer term). This means a student will not be able to Waitlist a course for that part of term.
