Eligibility for Student Employment

All student employees must:

  • Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)
  • Declare a financial aid eligible major
  • Be registered in at least six financial aid eligible credits
  • Have a complete and current financial aid package with an active student employment award

Apply for a Student Employment Award

Student employment awards are based on overall need. Check your myCNM for award updates, which will be posted within 10 business days from request submission.

Mandatory Background Check

A background check is required for all work study or student employment positions. Final hiring decision made by P.I. and Program Director in collaboration with CNM Administration; CNM reserves the right to rescind the offer of employment.

Required Documents

Two documents are required when applying for a student employee position. Applicants without the required documents may not be selected for hire.

  • Class Schedule
    • Sign in to myCNM
    • Select "Registration" tab
    • Select "Review your Schedule/Bill"
    • Select and submit the correct term in the drop down menu
    • Press Ctrl+P to bring up print menu
    • Change the destination drop down to "Save as PDF" and Save
    • Make note of where the document is saved
  • Award Page
    • Sign in to myCNM
    • Select "Financial Aid" tab
    • Select "Award"
    • Select "Award for Aid Year"
    • Use drop down menu and submit the current aid year
    • Select the "Award Overview" tab
    • Press Ctrl+P to bring up print menu
    • Change the destination drop down to "Save as PDF" and Save
    • Make note of where the document is saved

Attaching Documents to Applications

From the attachments page of your student employee application you can upload documents, such as a resume or cover letter, which may help the hiring supervisor with the decision making process. Applicants can also attach the required class schedule(s) and award offers from this page.
To upload documents, follow these steps:

  • Select "upload document"
    • A "+ upload" option will appear
  • Select the "+ upload" option
    • Add a title to your document. Name your documents in a way so that you can identify previous application documents from current documents.
      • i.e. First name Last name, document type, and year
        • John Smith Award offer 2018
    • Select "Choose File" 
      • Find and select the file you saved as a PDF or other document type
      • Select "Open"
    • Select "Upload" to upload the document to the application.

Uploaded documents are saved in your profile for use in other applications.

Available Work Study Programs/Awards

There are four types of work study funding available to students and one non work study student employment. Student employment funds may not be awarded if credits attended are makeup summer credits for another secondary education institution. Student employment funds may not be awarded to students with an "At Home" budget or low unmet need.

  • State Work Study (STWKS)
    • Valid and complete FAFSA
    • Minimum 6 financial aid eligible credits
    • Meet satisfactory academic progress
    • Funding provided by NM state government
  • Federal Work Study (FWS)
    • Valid and complete FAFSA
    • Minimum 6 financial aid eligible credits
    • Meet satisfactory academic progress
    • Funding provided by Federal government
  • No Need Work Study (NNSWS)
    • Valid and complete FAFSA
    • Minimum 6 financial aid eligible credits
    • Meet satisfactory academic progress
    • Funding specifically for students who lack unmet need
    • Funding provided by NM state government
  • CNM Employment (CNMEMP)
    • Submitted FAFSA
    • Minimum 6 financial aid eligible credits
    • Funding provided by Central NM Community College
    • May be subject to satisfactory academic progress criteria
    • Used in extreme cases
  • Student Employment (Non Work Study)
    • Minimum 6 financial aid eligible credits
    • May be subject to satisfactory academic progress criteria
    • Funding provided by pre-approved Departments
    • Program includes DACA, International Students, RRC Interns and Mentors, Tutors, and Accessibility Services R/W

Earning Work Study Wages

  • Student employment is generally a job on campus working a maximum of 20 hours per week at $15.00/hour
  • It is need based and considered part of our financial aid award

Mandatory Training

All CNM student employees must complete the mandatory training within 30 days of their start date, failure to complete mandatory training within the given 30 days may lead to termination of employment. The New Student Employment Orientation Training (NEO I) must be completed within seven days of hire. If assigned training has not been sent to the student employee’s assigned training folder in Workday Learning within five days of their start date, please contact Employee Training or the Student Employment Office. There are seven mandatory and three job-dependent trainings to be completed during their work hours:  

  • New Employee Orientation I (NEO I); 
  • Campus Safety and Emergency Response; 
  • Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA); 
  • Information Security for the General User; 
  • Preventing Discrimination and Sexual Violence – Title IX & Sexual Misconduct; 
  • The Americans with Disabilities Act Title II and Section 504; 
  • Unlawful Harassment Prevention for Higher Education Staff; 
  • New Hire Student Employee Program (assigned at hire-recommended to complete) 
  • Blood Borne Pathogen Prevention Program (Job-dependent. This must be completed before first work assignment);  
  • Defensive Driving (Job-dependent); 
  • Hazard Communication Standard Program (Job-dependent)
