FAQ's
When does a new group of students begin the program?
A new group (cohort) of Veterinary Technology students begin the first term coursework each Fall term.
Can I take courses in veterinary technology without being "in the program" - without having petitioned and been selected to start the program in the fall term?
Two of the required Program courses are available as "open enrollment" - open to any CNM student, including High School Dual credit enrollment students (please see the current catalog for course pre-requisite requirements). The two courses are:
VT 1004 - Veterinary Medicine Terminology
VT 1010 - Introduction to Veterinary Technology (theory)
Are there any other courses that would help me to be prepared for the Program?
Other courses are occasionally offered as "open enrollment" - courses especially of interest to students considering the veterinary or animal care field, or planning to petition into the Veterinary Technology Program. Both courses are also available to High School Dual credit enrollment students and include:
Preparation for Professional Success, VT 2096
This Distance Learning course includes weekly directed activities, reading assignments, and discussion group participation.
Animal Science Terminology, VT 2196
The course introduces terminology utilized during a career in animal agriculture or veterinary medicine. The course presents an overview of topics taught in introductory animal science courses, terms specific to species involved in animal science production, and terms related to companion animals.
Where do I get the "Petition Packet"? Where do I take my "Petition Packet"?
You gather specific documentation together, which creates your "petition packet" Then you deliver your documentation to the Health, Wellness, and Public Safety Administrative Office at the Main Campus, Jeanette Stromberg building, Room 310. (Please see Petition Information).
Will previous course work from other colleges count toward the veterinary technology program?
You will need to request copies of your transcripts from other post-secondary schools from which you wish to have course work transferred to CNM. Once those transcripts are received by CNM Records, you can obtain a CNM transfer equivalency worksheet from them. When you have copies of the transfer equivalency transfer worksheet, you may contact the Veterinary Technology Program and have an appointment with the Director or the Clinical Coordinator to review the coursework.
Computer Phobia...How comfortable do I have to be with a computer to take the veterinary technology courses?
Many of the veterinary technology courses require assignments to be completed on the computer, and/or emailed to instructors. Some lecture handouts and supplementary information is made available through "my CNM". Basic computer skills are helpful and basic computer skills courses are available at SAGE.
I work or have family obligations and want to take the Program part-time, is that possible?
Students are selected into the Veterinary Technology Program and must complete the courses in the prescribed sequence (see current catalog). The only courses available as open-enrollment are VT 1004, VT 1010, VT 2096, and VT 2196 (see other FAQ's). Unfortunately, the program cannot be completed in a part-time basis.
