Angie Castillo, Administrative/Technical Assistant, joined Job Connection Center (JCC) in November 2008, with nearly a decade of work experience at this institution. Angie started in the Technical Center in 1999, and then moved to Academic Advisement and Counseling for eight years. “I watched some students start by taking the GED exam, moving into regular classes, and then graduating from CNM, she explains. “It was like watching someone go from that first baby step to the final giant leap.” |
This process continues in JCC, where CNM students and graduates work on résumés and search for jobs. “I like the personal interaction with the students,” Angie says. “It feels like I’m meeting old friends again.” Angie enjoys watching students’ reactions when they see the final results of their résumés because, as she explains, “Many people don’t realize how much they have accomplished until they see it on paper.”
Though reluctant to boast about herself, Angie has accomplished a great deal during her career. She earned a degree in General Studies with honors from UNM while raising a family and working full-time. This busy woman has six children, fourteen grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and plenty of animals. “It’s a circus when we get together,” she says with a laugh, “But my children and my grandchildren are my world.”
Not one to remain idle, Angie uses her spare moments to write poetry and some of the stories she used to tell her children when they were young. “When someone reads something I have written, I’m truly amazed that they enjoyed the words that I have put down.”
Angie also finds pleasure and relaxation in assembling jigsaw puzzles. “It’s like when you’re getting to know a person,” she says. “You start from one end, and—piece by piece—you get to know them. When you put the last piece on the puzzle, you have something unique to look at. Every person I have ever come in contact with is very unique and precious to me.”
