CNM Wins National Student Success Award

The American Association of Community Colleges, which represents nearly 1,200 community colleges nationwide, announced Tuesday that CNM is the winner of its prestigious Student Success Award. CNM was named as one of five finalists for the award in February – the winner was announced at the AACC’s annual convention Tuesday in San Francisco, Calif. CNM set itself apart from the competition through its fast-rising graduation numbers and its innovative CNM Connect student-support model, which has been emulated at other community colleges around the country. Record Number of Students to Receive Associate Degrees, Certificates

Distance Learning Program Earns Two National Awards; Juliane Ziter Participates in International Competition

Arrive Early for May 4 Graduation Ceremony to Avoid Delays

The Spring 2013 Graduation Ceremony is set to take place Saturday, May 4 at Tingley Coliseum, located at the Expo New Mexico fairgrounds. The ceremony begins at noon. Faculty and staff participating in the ceremony should consider arriving at the fairgrounds no later than 11 a.m. There will be three other events taking place at the same time as the Graduation Ceremony, so traffic is expected to be heavy. Arrive early to avoid delays. Faculty and staff participating in the ceremony should have received a parking pass for Gate 3, located at Copper and San Pedro. Individuals not participating in the ceremony but who are planning to attend the ceremony should use Gate 8 (near the intersection of Lomas and Louisiana NE) to park. There is a $5 parking fee.

New Director of Libraries Announced

Poppy Johnson-Renvall has been selected for the position of Director of Libraries and Audio Visual Services. Poppy has accepted the position effective April 28. She possesses significant experience in the community college library setting and was previously the Associate Director of CNM Libraries, overseeing general operations of the library. Poppy also has library and media services management experience in previous roles.

Deputy Surgeon General of Navy to Speak at Nursing Pinning Ceremony

Navy Rear Admiral Karen Flaherty, Deputy Surgeon General and Deputy Chief of the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, will serve as the keynote speaker for the CNM nursing pinning ceremony on April 26. The ceremony will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Kiva Auditorium in the Albuquerque Convention Center. A total of 96 CNM nursing students will be pinned. Read more here.

Main Campus Library Staying Open Late Tonight

CNM Libraries has partnered with the Assistance Centers for Education to offer extended hours and tutors in the Main Campus Library through tonight for finals. The Main Campus Library will remain open until 11 p.m. Tutors in math, English, biology and chemistry will be on hand. Thanks to donations from Sodexo and Krispy Kreme, free coffee and doughnuts will be served at 8:30 p.m., while supplies last.

Rededication of Employee Memorial Set for May 8

A rededication ceremony for the employee memorial will take place at 3:30 p.m. on May 8 on the north lawn of the Student Resource Center on Main Campus. The new employee memorial, in the heart of CNM’s Main Campus, honors the lives of employees whose contributions made a difference at the college. All the names of employees who had plaques on the previous memorial have been transferred to the new memorial and others have been added since the previous memorial was taken down. When a CNM employee passes away, they will be honored for their service at the college with the installation of their name on the memorial. If a former employee passes, their name can be sponsored and installed on the memorial.

Parking Permits for Summer Term Now on Sale

Obtaining parking permits for the summer term will be done through an online process in myCNM. Paid parking permits will cost $43. After going through the online process, you can pay for the permit online or pay at the Cashier’s Office. The permits must be picked up at the Cashier’s Office whether you pay online or at the Cashier’s Office. Individuals picking up permits at the Cashier’s Office must show their driver’s license and CNM ID. The paper form process is no longer available. Those who have the cost of a paid parking permit automatically deducted from your paycheck do not have to go through the online process. If you have questions, call ext. 51622.

Blackboard to be Unavailable May 8-11 During Technology Upgrade
All Blackboard Learn services will be unavailable from midnight on May 8 through 6 a.m. on May 11 for an upgrade to the newest service pack software. The new upgrade will add user functionalities and a new dashboard feature. To view the latest upgrade features go to the Distance Learning website. If you have any questions, please contact the Distance Learning department at 224-4400.

Public Input Sought for UNM/CNM/Sunport Transit Study
The Mid-Region Council of Governments will be hosting three public meetings to get feedback on a list of potential transit routes as part of the UNM/CNM/Sunport Transit Study. A “long list” of possible routes was first presented in January, including University, Buena Vista, Yale, and Girard. Since then, the project team has conducted preliminary evaluations and met with local residents and stakeholders to identify the options with the most potential to meet the area’s diverse transportation needs. The findings will be presented at the following public meetings:>

  • Tuesday, April 30, 6 - 8 p.m., Loma Linda Community Center (1700 Yale Blvd SE) 
  • Wednesday, May 1, 12 - 1 p.m., UNM Student Union Building Lobo Room A/B 
  • Thursday, May 2, 12 - 1 p.m., CNM Student Resource Center, Room 204

The UNM/CNM/Sunport area is the region’s largest activity center, serving more than 90,000 residents, students, and employees. It also houses UNM Hospital and several key stadiums and special events venues. While the area has excellent east-west transit service, a 2011 study found that there are key opportunities to improve transit access to businesses, jobs, classes, and other destinations along the north/south corridor. The possible transit routes may also include “enhanced transit” elements that would create a faster, more comfortable, and more convenient experience for riders. These elements include bus-only lanes that would allow buses to bypass traffic congestion, comfortable stations with real-time information displays, off-bus ticket purchasing, specialized buses, and unique branding. The study has been underway since June 2012 and will be completed by early fall. It will recommend transit service expansions which would form the basis for potential federal funding and implementation. The study will also provide land use and parking recommendations that will help support and encourage transit use to create a more vibrant corridor with more transportation options. Early Adopters Program Available for Those Interested in Getting Ahead of the Curve on Microsoft Office 2013
The Office of Information Technology Services is now offering an Early Adopters Program (EAP) for the new Microsoft Office 2013 productivity suite. At the request of Academic Affairs, CNM will migrate to Microsoft Office 2013 productivity suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, etc.) for the fall 2013 term. In order to thoroughly test this software, ITS will be releasing the software to a limited number of CNM employees for general use and testing. (Please note: the Windows 8 operating system is not included in this Early Adopters Program, only the Office 2013 software.) 

Since releasing a new productivity suite like Office 2013 on to CNM’s networks can also introduce new risks and issues, the number of EAP participants will be limited to no more than 100 computers. Office 2013 will only be installed on CNM-owned computers.

 Participation will be prioritized for the following groups:

  • Computer and applications support personnel
  • CNM faculty (full-time or part-time)
  • Computer lab staff
  • Other interested participants

Participants agree to the following:

  • Your computer system will be subject to inspection, scanning and reconfiguration due to unforeseen computer and/or network related issues specific to CNM’s computing environment. Your computer system may be subject to having Office 2010 re-installed and/or Office 2013 removed two or more times through the course of the EAP.
  •  If substantial and unforeseen computer-related vulnerabilities are identified through the course of the EAP, your system may be disconnected from the network for security reasons.
  • Participants will be asked to complete at least one survey through the course of the EAP so that we can learn more about the customer experience with this new productivity suite.

To participate in the EAP program, please follow these four easy steps:

  • Go to the Footprints login site and log in with your windows username and password.
  • Once you are logged in, choose “ITS Service Desk,” then the “Service Catalog” icon at the top of the page.
  • Follow these links titled “IT Services,” “Software Services,” and “Early Adopters or BETA program.”
  • Fill out a short request form and save the request; arrangements will be made to install Office 2013 (areas where a single computer is shared between multiple users require that all users on that computer be notified.) 

Please note:  Office 2013 media for home use is not yet available. ITS has not received the Office 2013 media yet, but when it becomes available the CNM community will be informed via News Link. Job Connection Services Hosting ‘Meet the Employer’ Event for Students
Students in the healthcare field who are interested in making connections with employers in the area are invited to attend an April 26 “Meet the Employer” event. It will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Jeannette Stromberg Hall. This is not a recruiting event or job fair, but the opportunity for students to network with local employers for potential future employment. The Healthy Exchange Newsletter for Spring 2013, which is provided by CNM’s Employee Assistance Program, is now available in both English and Spanish. Articles include:

Student Employee Training Session Available
An information session is scheduled for student employees with an interest in learning more about CNM, specifically about CNM Connect. The goal is to provide an overview of the services offered by the department so that front-line staff can better assist students. This next session will be April 29 from 2-4 p.m. in SSC 205 and will focus on CNM Connect. Please RSVP by April 23 by emailing nbonney1@cnm.edu.

Staff Phone Extensions Changing – Check Schedule for When Your Department Extensions Change
As part of a major, ongoing project to upgrade CNM’s phone system capabilities, staff members will be receiving new phone numbers or extensions over the course of the spring and summer. Go to www.cnm.edu/phonechanges and look for the “Department Cutover Schedule and Timeline” link near the bottom-center of the page. CNM has access to a limited amount of phone numbers with the “224” prefix – this project will help CNM ensure that its phone system will be able to accommodate future growth. Changes to faculty members’ phone numbers/extensions were part of an earlier phase of this project last year – no new changes will be made to faculty phone numbers or extensions. Staff members will be assigned one of three different types of phone extensions – a personal extension, a position extension or a function extension. Students Build Pre-Fabricated Cottage That’s Up for Bid
Students in CNM’s Applied Technologies Manufactured Housing Program have put their impressive skills to work by building a two-bedroom cottage with an emphasis on green construction. It’s now up for bid to the public. The cottage is equipped for energy efficient appliances, with carpet in the living room and bedrooms, ceramic tile in the kitchen, bathroom and laundry rooms, and all rough-in inspections have been completed. Construction materials are worth approximately $30,000 without labor costs. CNM desires that the minimum bid amount be $20,000. Parking at Isotopes Park Not Available on Days When Games Being Played
Please be advised that Albuquerque Isotopes baseball season is under way and the parking areas that are available to CNM throughout the offseason are not available to CNM students or employees on game days at the park. Free Healthy Eating Workshop Available April 30 at Noon
Get on the path to a healthier lifestyle by attending a lunch-hour class that is part of a “Brown Bag Lunch and Learn Series” hosted at the Workforce Training Center. The April 30 class, which will offer nutrition tips for high blood pressure, will be held from noon-1 p.m. in Room 111 at the Workforce Training Center. To register, click here. Patio Outside Student Services Center Cafeteria Closing for Construction Project
The patio to the north of the Student Services Center cafeteria will be closed for a construction project that will convert some of the outdoor patio space into more indoor seating for the cafeteria. The patio area will be fenced off during construction, including the stairs leading up to the bicycle parking area. There will be loud noise and dust in the area during the beginning phase of the project. Accessing the SSC from the north side will require people to enter on the second floor. The project is expected to be completed by mid-August.
