Be Informed on Affordable Care Act
The Patient Protection Affordable Care Act will mandate that employers make benefits eligible to employees who work 30 hours or more per week. CNM already offers health insurance to employees who work less than 30 hours per week. CNM is fully committed to maintaining benefits at their current level for part-time employees. However, the New Mexico Public Schools Insurance Authority (NMPSIA) will be assessing costs after the Act has been fully implemented in order to determine if changes to benefits eligibility are necessary. CNM is also working with a benefits consultant to assess options in order to ensure the college continues to be diligent and thoughtful in providing CNM employees a robust benefits program.
Because there are still many unknown variables, CNM is unable to provide advice to individual employees because each employee’s circumstances are unique. In the meantime, CNM encourages employees to research their options by accessing these resources:
- Health Insurance Marketplace
- New Mexico Health Insurance Exchange

The Kaiser Family Foundation’s website also offers a calculator tool for health insurance premiums at http://kff.org/interactive/subsidy-calculator/. As CNM receives new information that could be helpful in decision-making processes, the college will provide updates.

Help Human Resources Improve its Web Presence
CNM’s Human Resources department and the Web Strategy department are seeking volunteers to provide input that will help guide a redesign of the HR web pages on cnm.edu. Groups of no more than seven volunteers will meet for an hour with an HR representative and a Web Strategy representative to view the HR website and discuss how it could be improved and how it can better serve as a valuable resource to all appropriate visitors, such as employees and job seekers. What kind of experience have you had with the HR website? What do you like about it? What would you suggest changing or adding? If you have recently worked somewhere else, were there aspects of the HR websites at other organizations you would like to see incorporated at CNM?
Your answers to these kinds of questions will help HR and MCO develop a new HR web presence that will better serve the CNM community. The sessions will be held each hour on Nov. 5 in the LSA Building, Room 103. Please sign up for sessions ahead of time through the CNM Events Calendar at http://calendar.activedatax.com/cnm/EventList.aspx?fromdate=11/5/2013&todate=11/5/2013&view=DateTime&display=Day&type=public. Flexible Spending Account Can Save You Money – Deadline Is Oct. 31
By joining CNM’s Cafeteria Plan (Flexible Spending Account), you can guarantee tax savings for yourself; therefore, put more money into your own pocket. The plan is a system in which employees can allocate money from their paycheck before taxes are taken out and have the funds put into an employee account that can be used to pay for medical expenses throughout the year. An amount of your choosing is withdrawn from your paycheck each pay period for the account. You simply submit receipts for reimbursement. The plan can reimburse twice each month. The deadline to apply for the Cafeteria Plan is October 31, 2013. The plan goes into effect January 1, 2014.
Your payroll taxes are calculated at about 25 percent of your pay. When you put some of your salary into the Cafeteria Plan, that 25 percent stays in your pocket instead of going to taxes. How much would you save?
If you defer this amount annually:
