Cooperative for Teaching & Learning Seeks Presenters for Second Annual Conference on Teaching and Learning
CNM’s Cooperative for Teaching and Learning (CTL) invites members of the CNM community to submit proposals for the second Annual Conference on Teaching and Learning that’s scheduled for Feb. 21, 2014.The unifying focus of the conference is “Cultivating Reflective Practice.” The conference will provide context in which participants can engage in self-reflection while exploring important topics and ideas related to teaching and learning. CNM Faculty Can Apply To Be a CTL Innovation Faculty Developer
CNM faculty members now have the opportunity to share their most innovative and effective classroom strategies by applying to be an “Innovation Faculty Developer” through the Cooperative for Teaching & Learning. This program provides a one semester course release or project compensation to allow faculty time to disseminate a proven instructional strategy more widely—in the department, school, and/or college. One faculty member will be selected from each of the six schools at CNM. The deadline for submitting an application is Monday, Oct. 28. Click here for more information.
Show Your Spooky Spirit During Monster Mash Photo Costume Contest
CNM’s Monster Mash is back! CNM’s annual costume contest will take place on Oct. 31 outside of the Student Resource Center on Main Campus from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. with online voting taking place on CNM’s facebook page. Put on your scariest, funniest or most clever costume and get ready to submit your photo to be part of the contest. If you’re not on Main Campus, you can email a photo to enter the contest. The three costumes that get the most “likes” will win prizes. Go to cnm.edu/monstermash for the scoop and get ready to get your spook on.
Save the Date, Oct. 30, for Third Annual Master Plan Event
You’re invited to attend the Third Annual State of the Master Plan Event on Wednesday, Oct. 30 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in the Richard Barr Board Room in the Student Resource Center. This event kicks off the new Master Planning cycle and gives you the opportunity to hear the status of the large technology and facilities projects planned for the college.
Banner Finance Revitalization News
The Accounts Payable Department is working to automate its processes through the Banner Revitalization project. As the first step in that process, beginning Nov. 1 Accounts Payable will accept scanned copies of approved invoices for payment. The approved invoices should be emailed to CNM_Invoices@cnm.edu. Please put the vendor name and the PO/BO/DPO number in the subject line of the email. This does not apply to P-card purchases at this time. A new notification system for electronic requisitions and budget transfer disapprovals will be in place soon. This system will automatically send an email to the submitter if a document is disapproved. The email will include the reason for the denial. More to come on this exciting process improvement!
Follett Donates $1 Million to CNM Foundation for Book Scholarships
During CNM’s recent grand opening ceremony for the newly renovated Robert P. Matteucci Hall, a surprise announcement spurred a standing ovation. The Follett Group, which runs the CNM Bookstore, donated $1 million for book scholarships. Find out more by clicking here.

Help CNM Lead the Way in Helping Those in Need
The Leading the Way employee giving campaign is under way. To sign up and donate to the charity of your choice, go to Leading the Way’s web page or contact any of the committee members listed on the site. Employees who contribute $24 or more per year, or at least $1 per paycheck, receive a gift from the campaign. Keep an update on your division and your department by checking the Leading the Way website. The Leading the Way campaign is having a competition among divisions and departments to see who acquires the highest participation. Go for the win!

Showcase Your Talent and Help Fundraise for Leading the Way
An entertaining fundraiser for the CNM Leading the Way campaign – “CNM’s Got Talent” – will be held on Nov. 21 at 6 p.m. at the Workforce Training Center. Any employee is welcome to sign up to share their talent and have an opportunity to have fun, entertain and amuse the employee community for a great cause. Tickets will be sold prior to and at the event, and all proceeds will support student scholarships. Help lead the way through entertainment. ‘Goodie Basket’ Raffle at Westside Campus
The Westside Campus will be raffling off “goodie baskets” to benefit the Rust Opportunity Scholarship through the CNM Foundation’s Leading the Way Campaign. Baskets and their contents are donated by CNM faculty, staff and students. Tickets are $1 and can be purchased in CNM Connect, any Westside faculty office or in the MJG Atrium Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and Fridays 8 a.m.-1 p.m. The raffle will take place in CNM Connect on Thursday, Oct. 31 at 3p.m. You don’t have to be present to win. Help Human Resources Improve its Web Presence
CNM’s Human Resources department and the Web Strategy department are seeking volunteers to provide input that will help guide a redesign of the HR web pages on cnm.edu. Groups of no more than seven volunteers will meet for an hour with an HR representative and a Web Strategy representative to view the HR website and discuss how it could be improved and how it can better serve as a valuable resource to all appropriate visitors, such as employees and job seekers. Help HR and MCO develop a new HR web presence that will better serve the CNM community. The sessions will be held Nov. 5 in the LSA Building, Room 103. Student Clubs Host Food Drive
Join CNM student clubs in contributing non-perishable food items during a food drive sponsored by the Road Runner Food Bank. The food drive runs through Oct. 31. Donate at all CNM campuses. On the Main campus, take your donations to CNM Connect (SSC, Room 101), the cafeteria, library (front circulation desk) and in SRC 203. At Montoya Campus, donate at CNM Connect in Tom Wiley Hall, Room 101, and the H Building Cafeteria. Free Flu Shots Available at CNM in October and November
CNM students and employees can get free flu shots in October and November. Bring your insurance card if you have insurance, but if not, the shots are still free. Dates and locations for the shots are:
- Montoya – Oct. 24, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., cafeteria
- Westside – Oct. 28-29, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., CNM Connect Area
- South Valley – Oct. 30-31, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., main administration area
- Workforce Training Center – Nov. 4-5, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

October Is Open Enrollment Period for Dental and Vision Benefits/Switch Enrollment for Medical Benefits
The switch enrollment period for medical benefits and open enrollment for dental and vision benefits takes place through the month of October. This is the time that the New Mexico Public Schools Insurance Authority (NMPSIA) offers open enrollment for United Concordia Dental and Davis Vision. You can also switch plans on Blue Cross/Blue Shield Medical and Presbyterian Medical plans. All changes made will be effective January 1, 2014. Flexible Spending Account Can Save You Money – Deadline Is Oct. 31
By joining CNM’s Cafeteria Plan (Flexible Spending Account), you can guarantee tax savings for yourself; therefore, put more money into your own pocket. The plan is a system in which employees can allocate money from their paycheck before taxes are taken out and have the funds put into an employee account that can be used to pay for medical expenses throughout the year. An amount of your choosing is withdrawn from your paycheck each pay period for the account. You simply submit receipts for reimbursement. The plan can reimburse twice each month. The deadline to apply for the Cafeteria Plan is October 31, 2013. The plan goes into effect January 1, 2014.
Your payroll taxes are calculated at about 25 percent of your pay. When you put some of your salary into the Cafeteria Plan, that 25 percent stays in your pocket instead of going to taxes. How much would you save?

Support Available for Families Who Lost Income During Government Shutdown Furloughs
CNM Connect can provide support for employees and students whose families were impacted by the recent furloughs caused by the U.S. Government shutdown. Achievement Coaches are available to help with your specific situations and help create a plan for moving forward. Coaches can help develop financial plans to meet obligations, identify community resources and advise students on available scholarships. STEM UP Students to Apply Physics to Pumpkin-Chucking Contest
Come to a pumpkin-launching contest that CNM and UNM students from the STEM UP program (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Undergraduate Pathway) will use to demonstrate math, engineering and physics applications that they have learned this year. They will launch pumpkins with a catapult they built across the BMX parking lot on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 5:30 p.m. Following the pumpkin-launchings, a Halloween Party will take place from 6:30-9 p.m. in the Student Resource Center, Room 204.
