Celebrate Student Success at Graduation Ceremony Saturday

CNM’s 2012 Fall Graduation Ceremony will take place at noon on Saturday (Dec. 8) at Tingley Coliseum. Albuquerque Mayor Richard J. Berry will be the keynote speaker. Admission to the event is free and employees are encouraged to attend. Employees who will be participating and wearing regalia in the graduation ceremony should have received a parking pass that provides free access to parking through Gate 3 of EXPO New Mexico, which is accessible from the intersection of San Pedro and Copper. General parking for graduates, employees not participating in the ceremony and other supporters attending the event will be through Gate 8, which is accessible from Louisiana Blvd., just south of Lomas. Parking for graduates will be free. The parking fee will be $5 per vehicle for employees, family and other supporters who are not participating in the graduation procession. Employees participating in the ceremony procession should be at the event no later than 11 a.m. There will be other events taking place at EXPO New Mexico on Saturday, so arriving early is recommended. Employees Must Submit Timesheets Early Due to Holiday Break

With the Holiday Break quickly approaching, timesheets need to be turned in early. For the current pay period (Dec. 1-14), paper timesheets are due by noon on Tuesday (Dec. 11) and electronic timesheet approvals are due by 1 p.m. on Wednesday (Dec. 12).  Payday will be on Dec. 18. It is recommended that timesheets be submitted early to ensure the deadlines are met.

For the pay period of Dec. 15-28, paper timesheets are due by noon on Monday, Dec. 17, and electronic timesheet approvals are due by 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 18.  Payroll must be processed early to ensure everybody gets paid after returning from Holiday Break on Jan. 2. The first payday of 2013 will be Friday, Jan. 4.
Please make sure approvers and employees submit timesheet by the deadline. With the two-week closure, there will not be much time for payroll adjustments if deadlines are not met or if there are errors on what is submitted to Payroll. Get a Seat at the Table for “Coffee and Conversations with the President”

Faculty and staff members are invited to join President Winograd for conversations in small, informal gatherings to discuss your topics of interest. There will be no preset topics for discussion, so please have some topics in mind if you plan to participate. To participate, RSVP to one of the sessions below by emailing Diana Chavez. Coffee will be provided. The schedule for “Coffee and Conversations with the President” follows:

  • Main Campus: Jan. 11 from 10-11:30 a.m. in the Student Resource Center, Richard Barr Board Room
  • South Valley Campus: March 22 from 1:30-3 p.m. in SV-10
  • Rio Rancho Campus: March 29 from 2:30-4 p.m. in RR-101

Employees Invited to Holiday Meet & Greet Dec. 11

All employees are invited to attend a Holiday Meet & Greet being hosted by President Winograd and CNM Governing Board members on Tuesday, Dec. 11, from 3-5 p.m. on Main Campus in the Student Resource Center Richard Barr Boardroom.

Governing Board Seats Up for Election Feb. 5 – Deadline to File for Candidacy Dec. 18

Five seats on the CNM Governing Board will be up for election on Feb. 5. Candidates must live within the CNM District and the deadline to file for candidacy is Dec. 18. Four of the positions to be filled through the election will be for Districts 1,3, 5 and 7, which will be four-year terms. The fifth position for District 2 will be for a two-year term to complete the remainder of an unfinished term that commenced in 2011. Legislature to Consider Changes to ERB

Employees should note that changes to the New Mexico Educational Retirement Board pension plan could be implemented in July 2013, including increases in employee contributions that could impact your take-home pay. The New Mexico Legislature will consider changes aimed at making the retirement fund more solvent during the 60-day legislative session that begins Jan. 15. Appointments for Academic Advising Not Available Jan. 2-4 and Jan. 7-11

Academic Advisement will be suspending appointments Jan. 2-4 and Jan. 7-11, but students will still be able to access advisors on a walk-in basis during those dates. Students are encouraged to make appointments with academic advisors prior to the holiday break (Dec. 19-Jan. 1) to avoid waiting in line for advising Jan. 2-4 and Jan. 7-11. Academic Advisement will resume taking appointments on Jan. 14.

Beat the Rush – Submit Print Requests for Spring Classroom Materials Now

Make the start of the spring term easier for you and the Duplicating & Postal Center by avoiding the printing rush at the beginning of the spring term. Submit your request for syllabi and other printed materials needed for the first week of classes now to ensure timely delivery. Printing wait times during the week prior and the week of the start of the spring term can be up to three business days. DPC is asking all instructors to plan ahead and avoid the last-minute rush so your request can be completed as quickly as possible. If you have any questions, contact DPC at Ext. 4-4554.

Seeking Outstanding Students To Be Suncat Ambassadors

CNM is seeking outstanding students to participate in the “Suncat Ambassadors” program. Suncat Ambassadors will represent CNM at various college and community events. It will be a good opportunity for students to network and build their resumes. Interested students can fill out an application here.

Parking Permits for Spring Term on Sale Dec. 10

Parking permits for the spring term will go on sale starting Dec. 10. Due to technical difficulties, paid permits will not be sold online; they can be purchased in person at the Cashier’s Office. To use payroll deduction to purchase a permit, call 224-4636.

Tax Help New Mexico Seeking Volunteers
Tax Help New Mexico, CNM’s free tax preparation service, is seeking volunteers for the 2013 tax season. Training sessions for volunteers will take place on the following dates:

  • Saturdays: January 5, 12 & 19 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Monday through Thursday: January 14, 15, 16 & 17 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
  • Monday through Thursday: January 14, 15, 16 & 17 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

To reserve a space in one of these sessions, email Geraldine Alires. Volunteers who complete the training will receive a certificate from the IRS and from the Tax Help New Mexico program.

Give the Gift of Learning with WTC e-Gift Card
The Workforce Training Center is offering an e-gift card that can be used to pay for non-credit courses at the WTC. There is no expiration date for the card. For more information about the e-gift card, click here or call 224-5200.

Tax Changes Could Affect Paychecks in January
Several tax cuts are set to expire at the end of the year unless the United States Congress extends them, as well as a previous cut to Social Security contributions. A two percent cut in Social Security contributions is set to expire at the end of the year. The payroll withholding tax could return to 6.2 percent, in place of the current 4.2 percent. Please note that these changes could impact your net take-home pay starting in January if the cuts are not extended by Congress. Make Sure Your Address on File Is Correct for W-2 Mailings in January
In January, W-2 tax forms will be mailed to your address on file in Payroll. Please verify that your address on file is correct by logging in to myCNM. Click on the “Employees” tab, then click on the “Personal Information” link under “Online Services” to access your address. Under “Online Services,” you can also click on “Tax Forms” to review your W-4 payroll withholdings. If you would like to change your payroll withholdings for 2013, visit the Payroll Office in the A Building.

Workforce Training Center Offers New Courses in 2013
The Workforce Training Center will be offering several new courses related to green building starting in January 2013, thanks to a grant from the Department of Workforce Solutions. The courses are:

  • LEED Certification Prep Classes for Green Associate and AP, beginning Jan. 22
  • BPI Building Analyst (inspection and analysis of a home’s energy consumption), beginning Jan. 28
  • Weatherization Installer beginning April 8
  • LEED for Contractors – Operations and Maintenance, beginning April 2
  • LEED for Contractors – Certification Prep Classes for Green Associate and AP, beginning Feb. 20

Still Time to Make a Difference – Donate to Leading the Way
The deadline to donate to the CNM Foundation's Leading the Way employee giving campaign is nearing, but there is still time to participate. With a donation of $24, which can be payroll deducted in increments of $1 per paycheck throughout 2013, donors will receive a CNM hooded sweatshirt as a “thank you” for donating. Vice President for Academic Affairs Office Temporarily Relocated
While renovations are being made to the LSA Building on Main Campus, the Vice President for Academic Affairs office will be temporarily relocated from LSA-101 and LSA-102 to the A Building, Room A-104 beginning Tuesday (Dec. 11). All phone extensions will remain the same. Phones and computers should be operational on Tuesday.  If you need assistance please call 224-4427.  The occupants of the second floor of LSA are not affected by this renovation.

Main Campus Library Extends Hours for Finals Week
The Main Campus Library will extend its hours to 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. today, Dec. 6, to accommodate students preparing for finals. Tutors from the Assistance Centers for Education will also be available in the library during the extended hours. Free coffee and cookies, provided by Sodexo and CNM Libraries, will be available while supplies last beginning at 8:30 p.m.

Toy and Winter Coat Donation Drive Organized by Students
CNM’s Executive Council of Students (ECOS) has organized a donation drive to benefit area children. If you have new, unopened toys or gently used kids’ winter coats, you can donate them at the CNM Connect location at any campus. The drive will run through Dec. 13. ECOS has partnered with KOAT’s Koats for Kids program. Once ECOS collects all the donated coats at CNM, it will provide them to KOAT, which will clean the coats and distribute them. Donated toys for boys and girls through this drive will be provided to various local charities in the community. Toys donated at the Rio Rancho Campus will go to the Rio Rancho Police Explorers Post, which hosts an annual holiday event for underprivileged children. For more information, email smartos@cnm.edu.

ITS Service Desk Closed During Winter Break, Dec. 19 Through Jan. 1
The ITS Service Desk will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 14, Dec. 17 and Dec. 18, then it will be closed for Winter Break from Dec. 19 through Jan. 1. In the spring term, the Service Desk will be open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. On Saturdays from Jan. 12 through Feb. 2, the Service Desk will be open from 8 a.m. to noon. Central Parking Lot on Main Campus Temporarily Closed Dec. 7-12
Due to the installation of new lighting in the Central Parking Lot, the lot will be temporarily closed from Dec. 7-12. Those with parking permits for the Central Lot will be able to park in any other lot on Main Campus. All lots will be open beginning Dec. 7. For more information, call 224-4636.

Say Farewell to Diane Zimmerly During Retirement Celebration Dec. 7
Stop by to wish Diane Zimmerly well during her retirement celebration on Dec. 7 from 2:30-4 p.m. in the Montoya Campus Art Studio (I Building, Room 110). Diane has served as the Montoya Campus art technician since 2006.

Business Office Renovations Complete
The Business Office renovations have been completed, and staff members are moving back to their regular offices next week.  After Dec. 5, Payroll, Accounts Payable, and Contracts & Grants will be located in the A Building, Room A-30.  The comptroller and administrative coordinator will be returning to the location of their previous office, which is now designated A-32.  All phone extensions will remain the same.  If you need assistance with an accounting issue or finding a staff member during the move, please visit the front desk at A-30, or call 224-4457.

Budget Office Staff Will be Visiting Control Agents
Budget Office staff will soon be scheduling visits to meet with department control agents and support staff.  Topics of discussion will include departmental budget status, FY13 budget-related timelines and general budget support.
