Support CNM and Higher Education – Vote on Bond C
Don't sit on the sidelines during this critical election season for CNM and higher education institutions across the state. Show your support for the vital role CNM serves in our community, as well as the critical role higher education serves across the state, by voting on Higher Education Bond C. No tax rate increase would be associated with the passage of this bond. If Bond C passes during the General Election, it would provide $119.4 million for facility improvements at public colleges and universities across the state. CNM would receive $10.5 million that would be used to improve learning environments for students and faculty, position CNM to reduce its energy costs and provide much-needed renovations to aging facilities at Main Campus and the South Valley Campus. Main Campus would receive long overdue upgrades to the aged science labs in the L Building. The South Valley Campus would also receive improvements to aging facilities. CNM and institutions across the state are in great need of repairs and improvements to facilities in order to provide the high quality educational experience New Mexicans deserve. Absentee voting begins Tuesday, Oct. 9. Early voting begins Tuesday, Oct. 9, at the Bernalillo County “My Vote Center” at 620 Lomas Blvd. NW from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Saturday until Nov. 3. On Oct. 20, 16 other early voting sites will open across the county from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The deadline to register to vote is Tuesday, Oct. 9. Election Day for the General Election is Nov. 6.
Deadline for Faculty to Register for Conference on Teaching and Learning Is Friday
CNM’s first annual Conference on Teaching and Learning will be held on Friday, Oct. 19, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Albuquerque Convention Center. The conference, developed by faculty for faculty, is a comprehensive professional development opportunity for all CNM faculty. The program includes dozens of 50-minute sessions presented by CNM faculty or staff on a variety of topics. The keynote speaker is Dr. Vincent Tinto, a distinguished professor at Syracuse University and a leading expert on student engagement and retention. Content Updates for Website To Be Frozen for a Week Starting Oct. 8
A content freeze for cnm.edu will begin on Monday, Oct. 8, in preparation for the launch of the new cnm.edu on Oct. 15. During this freeze, all logins to the old CNM content management system will be disabled and no new content will be allowed to be entered into the old system. If you have emergency content that needs to be added to cnm.edu, you can request an Emergency Content Update through the website launch page. This content freeze will allow the website launch team to migrate all remaining website content from the old cnm.edu content management system to the new one. Dependents of Faculty Eligible for Tuition and Fee Waivers
As a result of the recent collective bargaining agreements (CBA) between CNM and the bargaining units for full- and part-time faculty, dependents of faculty are now eligible for tuition and fee waivers. It’s the same benefit that was authorized for regular full- and part-time employees not covered by a CBA. CNM will waive tuition, registration and technology fees for CNM courses for spouses, domestic partners, and dependent children of eligible faculty or staff.
• The spouse, domestic partner, and dependent children of regular full-time faculty members are eligible for waivers of up to 12 credit hours per calendar year.
• The spouse, domestic partner, and dependent children of regular part-time faculty members are eligible for waivers of up to four credit hours per calendar year. Part time instructors must be working as an instructor during the term in which the waiver is requested and must complete their assignment for the term to avoid repayment.
• Domestic partners who have registered through CNM’s Human Resources Department are eligible for this benefit.
• A dependent child (including step-children, children of domestic partner, and legal guardianship) is eligible until their 24th birthday. The dependent may not turn 24 years of age during the course of an academic term in which the benefit is used.
Interested and eligible faculty members should make an appointment with their Human Resources Technician to complete the required paperwork. This benefit is effective 2012 Fall Term, so dependents of eligible faculty members who have already registered for classes covered by the benefit may take their paperwork from HR to the cashier’s office for reimbursement.

October Is Open Enrollment Period for Dental and Vision Benefits/Switch Enrollment for Medical Benefits
The switch enrollment period for medical benefits and open enrollment for dental and vision benefits takes place through the month of October. This is the time that the New Mexico Public Schools Insurance Authority (NMPSIA) offers open enrollment for United Concordia Dental and Davis Vision. You can also switch plans on Blue Cross/Blue Shield Medical and Presbyterian Medical plans. All changes made will be effective January 1, 2013. Flexible Spending Account Can Save You Tax Money
By joining CNM’s Cafeteria Plan (Flexible Spending Account), you can guarantee tax savings for yourself, and therefore put more money into your own pocket. The plan is a system in which employees can allocate money from their paycheck before taxes are taken out and have the funds put into an employee account that can be used to pay for medical expenses throughout the year. An amount of your choosing is withdrawn from your paycheck each pay period for the account. You simply submit receipts for reimbursement. The deadline to apply for the Cafeteria Plan is Oct. 31. The plan goes into effect January 1, 2013.
Your payroll taxes are calculated at about 25 percent of your pay. When you put some of your salary into the Cafeteria Plan, that 25 percent stays in your pocket instead of going to taxes. How much would you save?

Celebrated Poets Headline Spoken Word Event at Main Campus Library
On Oct. 18 at 3 p.m., the Main Campus Library will host “CNM Speaks: The Sound of Our Community.” Albuquerque’s first Poet Laureate, Hakim Bellamy, will perform, as well as Andrea J. Serrano, an Albuquerque-native and accomplished poet. CNM students and employees are invited to sign up for an open mic session. Bellamy is a national and regional Poetry Slam Champion and holds three consecutive poetry slam titles at the University of New Mexico. Serrano is the creator and host of “Speak, Poet: Voz, Palabra y Sonido,” a monthly poetry venue. In fall 2012, her book “My Ranchera Hips Can’t Dance Salsa and Other Poems” will be published. Students Planning to Transfer to UNM Can Attend ‘CNM to UNM Transfer Day’ Oct. 12
Students planning to transfer to the University of New Mexico are invited to attend “CNM to UNM Transfer Day 2012” on Oct. 12 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at UNM’s Student Union Building. The event will include information presentations on admissions, financial aid and scholarships, academic advisement and other areas of interest, as well as department tours and campus tours. University Transfer Workshop and Tour of UNM Set for Nov. 7
Students interested in transferring to a four-year college or university can learn more about the process at the University Transfer Workshop on Nov. 7 from 11 a.m. to noon in the Student Services Center cafeteria. From 1 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. on Nov. 7 at the UNM Student Support & Services Center (1155 University Blvd. at corner of University and Cesar Chavez), students are also invited to attend a UNM Information Session and UNM Tour. The info session and trolley tour will inform students about UNM campus life, the application process, financial aid, housing and more. Space is limited for the trolley tour. This is the perfect opportunity to show your support for students who are reaching their academic goals. Montoya Campus Library Book Club Delves Into ‘Life of Pi’
At 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 25, the Montoya Campus Book Club will host a discussion on Yann Martel’s novel, “Life of Pi.” This imaginative and unforgettable read is a winner of the Man Booker Prize. Enjoy Dia de los Muertes Celebration While Supporting CNM Students
On Nov. 1, the Hyatt Regency Downtown (330 Tijeras Ave. NW) will hold its 5th Annual Dia De Los Muertos Celebration from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. CNM students and alums will participate in the event. Fantastic food, entertainment and a silent auction are just a few highlights of the evening. Calavera dress encouraged – you can also get your face painted at the event! Ticket proceeds will benefit the CNM Foundation’s Culinary Arts Scholarship Endowment. The scholarship provides support to CNM students in need of financial assistance for tuition or to purchases books or tools required for their courses. Tickets are $30 per person and can be purchased through eventbrite.com. Parking for the event is free.
Native American Staff and Faculty Association Seeks New Members
In 2008, CNM American Indian/Alaskan Native staff and faculty gathered to discuss recruitment, retention and graduation of CNM American Indian/Alaskan Native students and to form a Native American Staff and Faculty Association (NASFA). It was a strong beginning and participants helped to support programs, initiatives and events across CNM. Currently, the association has only a few active participants. MRCOG Seeks Input from CNM Community on Traffic in Main Campus/University Area
The Mid-Region Council of Governments, UNM and CNM have initiated a project to evaluate transit, parking services and land development within the UNM/CNM/Sunport corridor. While evaluating the area’s diverse transportation needs, this project will recommend near- and long-term transit, land-use and parking strategies to improve these services for CNM and UNM. This study is being conducted in a manner that will qualify the resulting improvements for potential federal funding. Meetings are scheduled to discuss the project and to seek input and ideas from CNM faculty, staff, and students, area businesses, adjacent neighborhoods, and other interested groups. The first of several meetings has been scheduled:
- Community-wide meeting at Loma Linda Community Center, 1700 Yale Blvd. SE on Oct. 22 from 6-8 p.m.

Speaker Series Host Will Talk About Requirements for Federal Jobs
