CNM Governing Board Holds Tuition Steady
The Central New Mexico Community College Governing Board approved a 2009-10 budget – which totals $187,117,944 and includes no tuition increase – at its regularly scheduled meeting on April 14.
In light of the economic challenges, the CNM Governing Board approved a budget that includes no increase in tuition rates for CNM students in CNM’s Geographic Area of Responsibility (GAR). The tuition rate per credit hour will continue to be $41 for in-district students and $51 for out-of-district students. Tuition rates apply to academic college transfer courses. Career and technical and college-prep courses will remain tuition free for students within the CNM District. Those students outside the CNM District will begin paying tuition for career and technical and college-prep courses in Fall 2009.
The CNM Governing Board is committed to keeping tuition rates low at the college. This is the third year that the CNM Governing Board has not increased in-district tuition. CNM Governing Board Chair, Bobby Matteucci said, “The CNM Governing Board realizes our responsibility to the taxpayers within CNM’s district and are committed to providing access to affordable higher education to our constituents.”
“The CNM Governing Board continues to focus on student success and providing access to higher education for the citizens of central New Mexico,” said CNM president Dr. Kathie Winograd.
Due to the statewide budget reduction, the 2009-2010 CNM budget does not include a salary increase for employees. Compensation for union-represented employees is determined through the collective bargaining process.
“During these tough economic times, our priority has been to prevent layoffs and salary decreases while adjusting our budget to incorporate the reduction in General Fund appropriations from the New Mexico State Legislature,” said Dr. Winograd. “CNM will continue to provide an excellent place for working and for learning. We feel fortunate to have kept our current employees’ jobs safe as well as tuition rates that encourage the citizens of New Mexico to attend college.”
CNM will eliminate the $30 per credit hour technology fee attached to distance learning classes and institute a $3 per credit hour technology fee for all classes. This fee will support the ever-growing technology infrastructure of higher education learning requirements including wireless access, student open computer labs, upgrades to classroom technology, and other technology needs across the college.
For a full-time student taking 12 credit hours (four classes) the total technology fee will be $36 and can be included in financial aid awards for those students that are eligible.
