CNM Students to Build Habitat for Humanity House
Students at Central New Mexico Community College will take their construction skills to the real world when they start work on a Habitat for Humanity house this term. Ground breaking on the project will take place at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at 4616 Don Pedro Padilla Dr. SW, which is near the intersection of Coors Blvd. and Gun Club on the West Side.
CNM and Habitat for Humanity representatives, as well as the family that will eventually move into the house, will be at the ground breaking.
CNM has contributed to Habitat for Humanity projects before, but this will be the first time that CNM students will construct the entire house. Construction and carpentry students will start work at 9:30 a.m. Monday. Students studying plumbing, electrical, landscaping and air conditioning, heating and refrigeration will also take part in the project. Truck driving students will bring supplies to the work site.
Students will pick crew leaders and learn to work in teams to complete the project. The house is projected to be completed in the spring.
“A lot of times we want industry to support us,” says Paul Pascarella, director of construction technologies in the School of Applied Technologies. “Now we’re going out to support the community.”
