TAX HELP New Mexico’s Midnight Madness Helps Last Minute Tax Payers

TAX HELP New Mexico’s Midnight Madness will take place at Central New Mexico Community College’s Main Campus at Smith Brasher Hall from 8:30 a.m. to midnight April 15.

Certified tax preparers will be on hand to help tax payers beat the looming tax deadline. TAX HELP New Mexico files state and federal returns electronically so tax payers won’t have to make a mad dash to the post office.

TAX HELP New Mexico is in its 34th year and is for people whose household income is $42,000 or less or those who are 65 years or older.

In 2007, TAX HELP New Mexico served 25,000 customers and returned $21 million to the New Mexico economy. The IRS has praised TAX HELP New Mexico, which it uses as a nationwide model for other areas seeking to implement similar programs.

TAX HELP New Mexico, which began as a way to provide accounting students with work experience while serving a community need, now has 46 sites statewide this year. The sites are staffed by volunteers who attend training sessions and pass an IRS certification exam.
