Nearly 2,000 High School Students Explored CTE Programs at Open House

Feb. 28, 2014 -- CNM put more than 30 of its career technical education programs on display so high school students from around the region could explore potential education and career paths while getting first-hand interactions with programs and faculty members.

Nearly 2,000 high school students from around the region toured CTE programs on CNM’s Main Campus Feb. 28. Among Albuquerque Public Schools attending were Albuquerque High, Atrisco Heritage Academy High, Del Norte High, Eldorado High, Highland High, La Cueva High, Manzano High, Sandia High, Valley High, Volcano Vista and West Mesa High. Independence High in Rio Rancho, Los Lunas High, Bernalillo High, East Mountain High, Jemez Valley High and various other charter high schools from around the area also attended.

Many CNM programs provided activities for high school students to participate in or observe. Some examples included:

  • CNM’s Film Technician program filming a scene for a short movie – Zombie Attack!
  • The Electrical Trades/Photovoltaic program allowing students to race solar cars.
  • The Criminal Justice program provided a mock crime scene to investigate.
  • Students donned protective equipment and tried their hand at welding.
  • The Respiratory Therapy program demonstrated how life support machines work by aspirating a pig lung.
  • The Aviation Maintenance Technology program had a helicopter and jet engines on display.
  • Nursing and other healthcare programs conducted demonstrations with high-tech patient mannequins and nursing simulation labs.
  • The Culinary Arts program put its full-service restaurant and cooking labs on display.
  • And much more.

Industry partners from CTE fields were on hand to talk with students about career paths, and CNM employees conducted information sessions about the college and CTE programs.
