Who we are

consultation.jpg The CNM/United Way Tax Help New Mexico program was created with with two distinct purposes: giving Central New Mexico Community College accounting students real-world experience in preparing taxes, and providing a valuable service to the community at large.

Through this program, thousands of low- and moderate-income New Mexico residents have received free assistance in preparing and filing their tax returns.

Statewide Sites

Sponsorship agreements with state and local government agencies, businesses and non-profit organizations enable the Tax Help New Mexico program to provide services throughout the state.

These sponsoring organizations provide funds to train volunteers and purchase computer equipment and supplies. The program's media sponsors have donated advertising in print and broadcast media—including radio ads in English and Spanish. As CNM’s Tax Help New Mexico program adds more sponsors throughout the state, we expect to continue increasing the number of clients served and adding even more dollars to the state’s economy.

Participation from CNM & High School Students

Tax Help New Mexico also offers exceptionally qualified high school students the opportunity to volunteer for the program. Those students earn college credit for their volunteer work while also learning about the value of serving their community.

The CNM students who serve as volunteer tax preparers gain valuable work experience. These students gain the necessary knowledge to become certified as tax preparers by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS),  a designation that many employers look for when hiring. A number of Tax Help New Mexico volunteers have gone on to work for the IRS and the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department, launching careers that allow them to contribute even more to the state’s economy.
