Why Volunteer

The Tax Help New Mexico Program helps thousands of people prepare their tax returns every year with the help of dedicated volunteers. In addition to helping their fellow citizens, Tax Help New Mexico volunteers earn skills and certifications that can help them in future careers.

CNM Student Volunteers

CNM Student Volunteers

Students should register for ACCT 1220 – Volunteer Tax Training, a 2-credit class, offered every January for training on basic tax return issues and IRS software; plus ACCT 1998 – Volunteer Tax Preparation Internship, a 1-credit class, for the volunteer hours. See the Schedule of Classes for dates and times of classes.

CNM students who serve as volunteer tax preparers gain valuable work experience. Many of these students gain the necessary knowledge to become certified Internal Revenue Service (IRS) tax preparers, a designation that many employers look for when hiring. A number of Tax Help New Mexico volunteers have gone on to work for the IRS and the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department, launching careers that allow them to contribute even more to the state’s economy. CNM students may be eligible for a scholarship.

Community Volunteers

Before you can start preparing returns through Tax Help New Mexico, you must attend a Community Volunteer Training workshop. The sessions include information needed to pass the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) certification exam, which is required for anyone preparing tax returns in the community. Sign up by visiting the United Way of North Central New Mexico website today.
