Central New Mexico Community College and University of New Mexico representatives signed agreements on Monday (Feb. 4) to officially begin offering “2+2” programs that will make it easier for students to seamlessly transfer from CNM to UNM.
The “2+2” model allows students to attend CNM for the first two years of coursework and then move on to UNM for the final two years in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in a particular field of study.
One of the “2+2” agreements signed on Monday will allow students who graduate from CNM with a two-year associate’s degree in Pre-management to seamlessly transfer into UNM’s Business Administration bachelor’s degree program.
The other “2+2” agreement signed on Monday will allow students who graduate from CNM with an associate’s degree in General Studies to transfer into UNM’s University Studies bachelor’s degree program. Another agreement, which is being called a “1+3,” will allow students who earn a one-year certificate at CNM in General Studies to transfer to UNM for the final three years of a University Studies bachelor’s degree.
There are more 2+2 agreements being developed between the two institutions.
“This is a positive advancement for students and it’s a positive advancement for collaboration between CNM and UNM,” said CNM Vice President for Academic Affairs Susan Murphy, who participated in the signing of the agreements at UNM’s Scholes Hall. “And it lays the groundwork for many more CNM-UNM collaborative efforts to come.”
The 2+2 initiatives were prompted by a CNM-UNM Memorandum of Agreement that was signed by the two schools in August. It was the first agreement of its kind among higher education institutions in New Mexico. Through the MOA, the state’s two largest postsecondary institutions committed to creating more collaboration in a variety of areas that will allow students more seamless access to the best services both institutions have to offer.
