Mexican folk medicine and rituals will be the topic of the September Montoya Campus Speaker Series that is open to the public at Central New Mexico Community College on Thursday (Sept. 27) from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the J-Building, Room 124.

Dr. Eliseo “Cheo” Torres, vice president for student affairs at the University of New Mexico, will present “Revival of Curanderismo: Mexican Folk Medicine and Rituals.” The presentation will include descriptions of popular herbs and traditional herbs and their uses for hypertension, stress, arthritis and other uses.

“Knowledge of plants, many of them indigenous to the Southwest, and their uses, can help one better understand how folk remedies may or may not work, and how the combination of rituals and folk medicine can have implications for modern medicine,” Dr. Torres said.

The Montoya Campus Speaker Series is a CNM service to the community that brings in speakers to share their knowledge and expertise on a variety of subjects. CNM’s Montoya Campus is located at 4700 Morris St., just north of the intersection of Morris and Montgomery Boulevard. The next speaker in the series is scheduled for Oct. 4.
