CNM students continued the college’s tradition of excellence at the 2008 National SkillsUSA Championships that were held June 23-27 in Kansas City, Mo. The event, which drew more than 5,000 student competitors in 93 events, is the largest showcase in the nation for outstanding career and technical college students.
CNM students won two gold medals, nine silver and one bronze, while seven others finished among the top 10 in their events. CNM’s two gold medalists were Tomomi Miller in Commercial Baking and David Jacobs in Geospatial Technology. CNM students swept the medals in Geospatial Technology, which students learn in CNM’s Geographic Information Technology program. Thomas Elliot won the silver medal in Geospatial Technology and Darryl Del Frate took the bronze.
Eric Arellano won silver in Prepared Speech and the CNM SkillsUSA team won the silver medal for Outstanding Chapter, reinforcing CNM’s reputation as one of the top SkillsUSA chapters in the country. Students representing CNM in the Outstanding Chapter competition were Megan Horton, John Phelps, Miguel Rivera, Thomas Bateman, Jennifer Stone, Sharla Ayze and Amanda Salazar.
Other CNM students finishing in the top 10 of their categories included Jeffrey Simpson (Geospatial Technology -- 5th); Cory Matthews (HVAC and Refrigeration -- 9th); David Fuentes (Job Interview -- 6th); Susan Linnenbrink (3-D Visualization and Animation -- 10th); Chris Castro (Culinary Arts -- 7th); David Lazcano (Plumbing -- 8th) and Sam Lockwood IV (Residential Wiring -- 8th).
