'Arts Fandango' to Honor Former Art Instructor and Support Scholarship
SCA Contemporary Art Gallery is located at 524 Haines Ave. NW in Albuquerque.
The fundraiser will feature a silent auction of artwork donated by the college’s faculty, staff, students and alumni, as well as local professional artists. All proceeds from the auction and ticket sales will go toward the Ernest Garcia Emerging Artist Scholarship.
In addition to the auction, there will be free food and music by blues and classic rock band The Great Blue Whale, made up of CNM employees. The first recipient of the scholarship, a current CNM art student, will be announced at the event.
“At the first fundraiser held last year we raised more than $4,000,” said Andrew Tibble, CNM faculty member and event co-organizer. “About 75 pieces of artwork were auctioned off, including sculptures, three-dimensional pieces, painting and drawings. We expect to do as well or better this year.”
Garcia taught art for 22 years at CNM, where he pioneered the studio art program, instituting the school’s first studio classes. His artwork was largely based upon Southwestern themes. Garcia died of cancer on July 18, 2012.
Tickets will be sold at the door. Cost to students is $5, all others $10. Attendees are asked to bring cash or check to pay for their winning bid.
In addition to Tibble, other event organizers include Art faculty members Lyn Johnson, Cheryl Dietz and Lea Anderson.
