Tax Help New Mexico volunteers helped more than 20,000 New Mexicans file their taxes before the deadline on April 15. The free service also saved taxpayers an estimated $4.7 million in tax preparation fees.

Tax Help New Mexico is provided through a partnership between CNM and the United Way of Central New Mexico. There are 26 sites around the state, staffed by volunteers who have passed an IRS certification exam. Volunteers are trained to help taxpayers take advantage of tax credits they're entitled to, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit.

The tax preparation services are free for New Mexicans whose annual income is less than $52,000 and for those who are age 65 and older regardless of income.
