Learn About Kirtland Fuel Spill on Wednesday During Water in Desert Series

Oct. 8, 2015 -- Dr. Dennis McQuillan, geologist for the Environment Department and technical lead for the Kirtland Fuel Spill Remediation Project, will speak about his work on the spill and similar endeavors with the Animas River cleanup on Oct. 14 from 6-7 p.m. in the CNM Student Resource Center, Room 204.

His talk is part of the ongoing CNM program “Water in the Desert,” an eight-week education series hosted by the CNM Sustainability Curriculum Committee to raise awareness of water resources issues and foster pro-social behaviors relevant to water resources at CNM by providing experiential learning opportunities for students. Each week through November learning opportunities will be available through films, seminars and on-campus service activities relevant to a specific aspect of the water in the desert.

This week's events are organized by Heather Fizgerald, Biology instructor and coordinator of  Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) outreach.

Other activities this week include:

  • Oct. 13 (Tuesday), 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Film "Poisoned Waters" (Max Salazar Hall, Room 107)
  • Oct. 16 (Friday), noon- 1 p.m., Scoop the poop trail cleanup (the Roberts Dam trail head across from JMMC). Directions to the trail head. Interested participants should meet at the bottom of the dam structure on the west side near Juan Tabo.
