What does a Phlebotomist do?

Phlebotomists collect and process blood specimens using approved venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques. Requires a high level of professionalism when working with patients.

How often is the program offered?

Both options are offered every term.

How does the program work?

Students study phlebotomy theory in the classroom, practice skills in campus labs and then participate in clinical experiences in area health care facilities.

How long does the program last?

  • 1-term, 10 week option at South Valley campus or

  • 2-term, 15 week option at Westside campus.

1-term, 10 week South Valley Campus classes meet Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:00 am to 1:45 pm for the first 5 weeks then participate in clinical rotations the 2nd 5 weeks of the term.

2-term, 15 week Westside class meet Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 4:30 pm to 8:45 pm for 10 weeks (starting later in the term) then participate in clinical rotations the 1st 5 weeks of the next (2nd) term.

What are the class hours?

1-term, 10 week South Valley Campus classes meet Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:00 am to 1:45 pm for the first 5 weeks then participate in clinical rotations the 2nd 5 weeks of the term.

2-term, 15 week Westside class meet Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 4:30 pm to 8:45 pm for 10 weeks (starting later in the term) then participate in clinical rotations the 1st 5 weeks of the next (2nd) term.

What are the clinical hours?

Regardless of which option the student is in, the clinical rotation hours are the same and both last 5 weeks.  Students are scheduled for five shifts per week, 5 days a week, during the day.  Those shifts may begin as early as 4:30 am and may go as late as 3:00 pm.  It is recommended that students make arrangements to be available for clinical rotations until 3:00 pm during the 5 weeks of the clinical course.

What are the prerequisites?

HLTH 1001
Math Proficiency 2
Reading & Writing Proficiency 2
MLT 1001 Preparation for Medical Laboratory is a pre or corequisite

What are the clinical requirements?

Students must meet all of the clinical requirements (including clinical background screen, drug screen, and immunizations) as listed on the Office of Clinical Compliance website.  These requirements will be discussed in more detail the first day of class.

How much does the program cost?

Students pay the regular CNM registration fee, technology fee and CTE tuition.  In addition, students must pay for finger printing, immunizations, and a required book.  Generally, students can complete the program for approximately $750.

    Is the program financial aid eligible?

    No

    How can I apply for MLT/Phlebotomy scholarships?

    First, be sure to apply for CNM Foundation scholarships and you can also join the ASCP (it’s free!) and apply for their scholarships.

    How do I register?

    For 1-term, 10 week South Valley campus option: Sign up for PHLB 1010 sec 551, PHLB 1092 sec 551, and PHLB 1090 sec 951.

    For 2-term, 15 week Westside option: Sign up for PHLB 1010 sec 351 and PHLB 1092 sec 351.

      Why can’t I have department approval?

      The PHLB 1090 901 course that requires department approval is reserved for students in the 2nd term of their 2-term Westside campus program.  No others will be admitted.

      What do I do if the classes are full?

      Classes fill on a first come first serve basis and usually fill the first day of registration. Students must continue to watch myCNM until the first day of classes and register as soon as spot opens up.

      Will you overfill or otherwise let students in the first day?

      • Students who have not been able to register for PHLB courses prior to the first day of classes may come on the first day to see if another student does not attend.
      • Permission to enroll will be given at the end of the first day only if a seat opens up and only on the first day. No “overfills” will be given.
      • In the event that the number of students wanting a seat exceeds the number of seats available, seats will be filled based on a lottery system.

      What if I am registered for PHLB classes and am absent the first day?

      Students who are absent on the first day and have not let their instructors know ahead of time, will be dropped from the classes immediately.
