Class Attendance & Non-Participation Policy

Students enrolled for credit or audit are expected to attend all class sessions. While the method of tracking attendance will vary depending on the class format, all instructors will track attendance in all classes whether delivered on campus, online, or other delivery modes.  Students with excessive absences or non-participation may be dropped from a course.  However, students should not assume they will be dropped automatically.  For details on different course types, please see below.

Students in on-campus classes:

  • Students who do not inform their instructors about missing the first class meeting may be dropped.

  • Students who miss the first week of the term may be dropped from the course regardless of informing the instructor or not.  Accelerated courses will use a comparable time frame.
  • Students’ attendance will be tracked via methods that are described by the instructor in the course syllabus. These methods are based on CNM and departmental policies.

Students in online based courses, any format:

  • Students who fail to login at the beginning of the course may be dropped for non-attendance or non-participation. Please refer to course syllabi for any additional details.
  • Students must demonstrate a record of course participation that is based on academically related activities in order to demonstrate attendance” in the course. The minimum academically related activity for course participation will be outlined in each course syllabus.
  • Students’ academically related activities will be tracked via methods that are described by the instructor in the course syllabus. These methods are based on CNM and departmental policies.

Dropped Students:

  • Enrollment in co-requisite courses may be impacted when a student is dropped by an instructor for non-attendance.
  • Students who are dropped by an instructor for non-attendance or non-participation will be notified via an official CNM notice from the registrar through their CNM e-mail address.
  • Students who believe they were dropped by mistake must contact the instructor within two working days of receipt of the drop notification.
