Youth Development, Inc. (YDI) Head Start/Early Head Start is a federally funded early education and care and preschool program which serves over 1,600 children in its service area of Bernalillo, Rio Arriba, and Taos Counties. YDI Head Start serves 1,258 preschool children in Bernalillo County; 219 preschool children in Rio Arriba County; and 216 preschool children in Taos County. YDI Early Head Start serves 48 infants/toddlers and 8 pregnant moms in Bernalillo County and 16 infants/toddlers in Taos County. YDI serves an additional 16 infants/toddlers under contract with the City of Albuquerque.
Services for children include: a multi-cultural educational program that is tailored to each child's individual needs, fosters self-esteem, and develops cognitive, language, motor, and social skills; medical and dental screenings and follow-up treatment along with classroom lessons that emphasize a variety of preventive health practices; evaluation, diagnosis, special services along with a nurturing mainstreamed classroom environment for children with special needs; nutritious meals and snacks eaten in family style settings, along with nutrition education in the classroom and for parents to use at home; and transition services for children and their families as they move from Early Head Start into Head Start and from Head Start into Kindergarten.
Parents are welcomed to the program as involved participants in their children's growth and development. Parents can receive training to become paid teacher substitutes in the classroom and frequently continue to become Head Start teachers and staff members in all component areas. At YDI, forty-five percent of Head Start staff are parents of current or former students. Parents have ample opportunities for leadership in the program. They serve on the Head Start/Early Head Start Policy Council and on Center Committees and have a voice in administrative decisions and programmatic evaluation. YDI Head Start offers classes and workshops especially for parents in many subjects, including parenting and nutrition, language and job skills, as well as workshops in developmentally appropriate activities that parents can do with their children at home.
Head Start/Early Head Start also has a comprehensive social services component. Component staff help families assess their individual strengths and needs and work together to develop a parent/staff partnership agreement in the achievement of expressed family goals. YDI Head Start/Early Head Start staff refer families to community resources and assist families in connecting to those resources. Services for children and families are offered in the context of active partnerships with a wide variety of community agencies and programs.
