2020 Census

What is the 2020 Census?

Every ten years, the census records everyone living in the United States. The census count is in our Constitution and has been part of our civic responsibilities since 1790. The census has shaped our nation and its population growth in fascinating ways. An accurate count is important to the future populations living in the U.S. To learn more and see the progression of the census since its inception, view a timeline of census history.

Why is the 2020 Census important to CNM and everyone living in New Mexico?

Your participation in the census impacts generations to come. An accurate count informs funding decisions in our community. The census count affects the number of representatives we have in Congress, funding for our roads, our schools, access to healthcare, and much more. Responding to the census is also required by law.

New Mexico loses almost $3,000 for every person who goes uncounted and could stand to lose out on some of the more than $6 billion in governmental funding that New Mexico is entitled to.  Be counted! Respond to the call to participate in the 2020 Census.

Who is required to respond?

Everyone living in the 50 states, District of Columbia, and five U.S. territories (Puerto Rico, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands) is required by law to be counted in the 2020 Census.

What does the U.S. Government do with my information?

After you provide your census response, your personal information is kept safe. By law, it can’t be shared with any other government agency, law enforcement, landlord, or employer. It’s much safer than the data stored on your phone!

How do I participate in 2020 Census?

Responding to the 2020 Census has never been easier. For the first time, you will have the option to respond online, including from your mobile device. You can also do so by phone or by mail. It’s easy, and it’s quick.

Participate in the Census before or on April 1, 2020. If you do not respond, get ready for a visit from a Census worker at your door. Starting in May, Census workers are set to go door-to-door to collect responses in person for every non-responding household.
