When and where to refer students in a crisis

Assess the situation

  1. How serious is the crisis? Is there threat to self or others? If yes - call Security at (505) 224-3001.
  2. Do you feel comfortable talking to the student to assess the situation? Do you have time to assess the situation?
  3. Is there a semi-private place where you can talk to the student without creating a scene?

Possible questions to ask

  1. Have you ever been through something like this before? What helped you get through it? (Can you try that right now?)
  2. Is there someone you trust that you or I can call to come be with you right now?
  3. Would you be willing to go to CNM Student Counseling to talk to a counselor?
  4. Can I walk you to Student Counseling?
  5. I want to get people involved who can help you. I am going to call or email _________ (Dean of Students, CNM Security) and ask them to contact you.

What is a Wellness Check?

A wellness check is an examination carried out by Security or APD to verify the physical condition of a student.

Are e-cigarettes (vapes) allowed inside buildings or the classrooms?
