Employee Excellence 2011
January 2011

The employee Excellence Awards recognize employees for exceptional contributions to the CNM community. The following Excellence Award winners were honored at a luncheon on Dec. 3. Congratulations to all of the excellent employees!

Dawn Addington

Provided Exceptional and Outstanding Support

Dawn suffered a detached retina, which kept her at home, keeping her head down for the bulk of each day. Typically, Dawn would be busy finishing up summer term responsibilities and getting ready for a fall term with a promise of record enrollment. From her face-down position at home, Dawn was e-mailing, telephoning and organizing for the fall term. She literally recruited part-time faculty lying on her stomach, looking at the floor. Due to her efforts, the fall accounting program began without a hitch. Dawn Addington is really incredible in terms of her dedication and commitment. She deserves recognition for her exceptional performance.

Laura Aguirre, Lillian Cordova, Joshlyn Romero and Yvonne Ybarra

Provided Exceptional and Outstanding Support

During the enrollment period for the Fall term, the Achievement Coach in MSE took another position with the state.  The office staff had to chip in to manage the significant student traffic that we receive each Fall seeking Multiple Enrollment overrides.  Without the help of Joshlyn Romero, Lillian Cordova, Laura Aguirre and Yvonne Ybarra, MSE would not have been able to provide this significant service to our students.

Arsenio Anaya

Provided Exceptional and Outstanding Support

For a six week period (March and April 2010), while the Master Plumber was on Family Leave, Arsenio handled all incoming plumbing work in a timely and efficient manner so the department would not fall behind and affect the students or staff. The work included radio calls, work orders, being on call 24/7 and any other problems that came up.

Fred Arellano

Provided Exceptional and Outstanding Support

Fred is known for going above and beyond regular job duties to assist with items such as furniture arrangements for a special meeting, setting up or moving furniture, or other items when Shipping & Receiving has not been available for these tasks. Last year, Fred was very instrumental in planning and preparing for the Montoya Campus 30th Anniversary Celebration. He worked with his team and the committee to facilitate electrical and janitorial needs for the event. Montoya Campus has a Memorandum of Understanding with Manzano High School where a group of APS supervised special needs students come to campus every Friday during the school year to clean tables, computer keyboards, bulletin boards, and shred confidential documents. Fred was instrumental in approving this project; he assigned one of his operations crew to prepare supplies and to greet the Manzano group when they come to campus.

Luis Arvizu

Provided Exceptional and Outstanding Support

This Instructional Technician in the School of Applied Technologies really put students first when the full-time faculty member left suddenly for emergency surgery and was unable to complete their course load for the Summer and Fall terms. Luis stepped in to take over all of the classes for this instructor. This was over and above what was required but he wanted to make sure there was continuity in the program and that students would not suffer because of an unavoidable situation.

John Bronisz

Provided Exceptional and Outstanding Support

John exemplifies a personal excellence at the highest level. Overseeing the development of a new campus (Alameda) and coordinating the move back into the TC building are a few of the “big” tasks John is charged with, but the thing that makes John unique is his attention to small details and commitment to those around him.  He inspires by example, by his commitment to our students, and an absolute even keeled demeanor in trying situations. He makes everyone he works with feel valued, and is one of the humblest decent people I have had the privilege of knowing.

Rachel Buchen

Provided Exceptional and Outstanding Support

Rachel Buchen, Financial Aid, Rachel has gone beyond her normal job duties to develop and deliver training in Financial Aid to the Contact Center. She has also created training materials. These training sessions and materials will serve the Contact Center and Financial Aid staff and student employees now and in the future. It will mean that the students will be receiving accurate and consistent information. We really appreciate you Rachel!

Nahum Chavez

Provided Exceptional and Outstanding Support

The following is from a letter received from an Instructional Technician. "For six months now I have been aware of Nahum Chavez's duties relative to CNM's Montoya Campus. It is also apparent in speaking with Nahum that he is very conscientious in covering for his coworkers when they are out. He is willing to assist in needed duties whatever requirement e.g. stripping and waxing the floors or shampooing carpets etc. It is my opinion that Nahum has provided exemplary service in terms of housekeeping and maintenance of these facilities. I would recommend his work to anyone demanding conscientious results. He is pleasant to speak with and provides a congenial attitude. This is an important trait we all need to provide in keeping a compatible environment in which to work and coexist. I would recommend Nahum as a beneficial addition to any team and I am glad to have his availability here at Montoya Campus." Dante Riccon.

Marla Cox

Provided Exceptional and Outstanding Support

Marla was instrumental with the implementation, roll-out and training for a new software system SYMPLICITY for the Job Connection Center.  I was tasked with the implementation of a new system for managing students, employers and jobs for the Job Connection Center.  During the implementation stage, my family was struck with tragedy, leaving me grieving and away from the office. After returning, Marla came to my office, sat next to me and said – “OK, let’s take a look at the employer side of the software.”  For hours, days and weeks we pecked away and developed an excellent product. She learned all the modules and spent countless hours of her own time at home testing the system and making quality recommendations for enhancements.  Marla did this while she was completing her own “job as a Tech II” while she herself was battling health issues.  She put herself aside to come to my aid and show the JCC staff her quality skills and abilities.  Marla stepped up to the plate.  She was never asked – she just did. Thank you Marla for all you do.

Susie Cutler

Provided Exceptional and Outstanding Support

Susie is an outstanding Associate Dean. She is focused, disciplined, and committed to student success. I am a part time faculty teaching going on six years. One of the reasons I continue to teach other than my passion for teaching is due to the support I receive from Susie. She is incredibly responsive and assists you in all your needs. She displays her passion for student success in all her actions. She works late into the evening often to ensure students and faculty member's needs are met. Susie serves others with her pleasant demeanor creating positive resolutions in all that she assists with! Thank you, Susie, for caring about our students in New Mexico! You are making a difference in the world of education advancing our status in New Mexico! You are an awesome individual!

Meredith Daggett

Provided Exceptional and Outstanding Support

During Spring Adult Education registration, Meredith volunteered her time to help organize and process the hundreds of students coming to test and register for Adult Education classes.  For two weeks, she reported to work an hour before her shift to assist me in preparing the materials needed to process and organize the students in a timely manner.  Without her assistance, the testing and registration offices would not have been able to process the 200 plus students that began arriving at 6:30am.  Her commitment to customer service at CNM is incredible.  Her focus is always on helping students to have a positive experience and feel good about their decision to return to school

Katherine Duquette

Provided Exceptional and Outstanding Support

Kathy has quickly become a tremendous resource to the Workforce Training Center team. She has been responsive and proactive throughout the implementation of the Lumens registration system and has taken on additional responsibilities for online training with ed2go. On the occasion of a fellow employee's absence (3-5 days) she covered all of her duties while giving the new duties full attention as well. It's as if she is two people! She juggled phone demands, clients at her desk, and the usual operational demands with grace. And, she accepts additional work in the truest of team spirit. Kathy sets a high standard with respect to quality and efficiency and serves as an ideal role model for administrative staff.

Danyelle Gamble

Provided Exceptional and Outstanding Support

Danyelle is the technical support supervisor for MSE science labs. During the two weeks between the summer and fall term, she coordinated the move of two labs from the Westside campus to the Rio Rancho campus. She also set up a new Microbiology lab at the WS campus. She supports the science labs by making sure all needed materials are on hand. Danyelle has even saved CNM a huge amount of money by mixing up reagents in the prep room. She also trained the new lab technicians at the west side. Danyelle has been doing twice her work load and still has a smile and a compliment to share with the people she works with.

Florinda Garcia

Provided Exceptional and Outstanding Support

Florinda is a life-saver for the students at the South Valley campus in the Veterinary Technology Program. She has expanded the South Valley library to include several needed reference books. She is always willing to assist students with research, review research papers, and request reference material as needed. Florinda was instrumental in obtaining tables and chairs from the library at Main campus for use in the South Valley campus, making this library more spacious and comfortable for studying. Her efforts have greatly impacted CNM and the South Valley campus. She is absolutely wonderful and very deserving of this award. We Vet Tech students just adore her!

Andrea Gurrola

Provided Exceptional and Outstanding Support

Andrea works in the admissions office at Main campus and with record enrollment continues to consistently support School Relations. School Relations is growing the number of classes held at high schools. During enrollment, Andrea answers questions from teachers, facilitators and students needing to make enrollment deadlines. She looks up CNM ID numbers for students, researches audit trails and troubleshoots issues. Andrea is consistently well-informed, efficient and patient during the most trying time of the year. Students and high school teachers comment on her friendliness and helpfulness when they come to CNM Main campus to register. Her support has greatly helped to grow enrollment and support our high school partners.

Susan Johnson

Provided Exceptional and Outstanding Support

Susan is the Chair of the Biology Division. She is very organized in keeping everyone informed on five campuses. Yes, this is a part of her job description but she accomplished this in an exceptional manner after major surgery in August. She initiated the use of WIMBA as a way to have committee meetings without having to meet on a particular campus. This saves driving time and allows meetings at more convenient times while relaxing on the couch with an "electronic notebook." An amazing amount is accomplished due to Susan's efforts.

Wayne (Harold) Kibler

Provided Exceptional and Outstanding Support

Wayne Kibler, HVAC Technician, provides excellent service to the Montoya campus on a daily basis. Wayne is friendly, approachable, and keeps us informed regarding status of projects. He goes out of his way to assist with tasks that are not a part of his normal job duties. Wayne is the supervisor in charge when the Maintenance Supervisor is out of the office. Recently the Montoya campus experienced an emergency involving the gas lines. Wayne stepped in as the supervisor in charge and handled all aspects of the entire emergency extremely well. During the emergency he worked extra hours and even on the weekend to ensure the gas lines were repaired as quickly as possible, with minimal disruptions to classes and employees. Every term break, all HVAC units are completely serviced and Wayne is the only licensed HVAC technician for several campuses. He keeps all the units going and therefore keeps all of us in a comfortable campus environment.

Roland Lagunzad

Provided Exceptional and Outstanding Support

Recently the computers went down in the Gallery here on the Main campus. It was during a difficult time: when our materials come in and need to be dispersed. Roland went out of his normal job duties and stayed late to search and find the problem and find a new computer for us to borrow until one could be replaced. He is always cheerful and helpful and has really gone out of his way to solve and accommodate our technical problems.

Jackie Lamoureux

Provided Exceptional and Outstanding Support

I am a student of Jackie Lamoureux in her IT 1010 class. I wanted to let you know what a great instructor she is. I have been struggling with downloading and uploading assignments. She went beyond the call of duty last Friday. She met with another student and myself to give us additional tutoring. She was off on Friday and did not have to meet with us, but she DID. She is an awesome instructor! She really does want to see that her students are successful in her class. Thank you for hiring a GREAT instructor like Jackie.

Gary Lavender

Provided Exceptional and Outstanding Support

This former Instructional Technician, who is also part-time faculty, put students first when a full-time faculty member left suddenly. Gary stepped in to take over the full-time classes for the Spring and Summer terms so students would have continuity in the program and not be adversely affected by the unavoidable situation. This allowed us to recruit and hire FT faculty for the program.

Samuel Lovelette

Provided Exceptional and Outstanding Support

Samuel has always gone above and beyond the call of service. In the past years he has volunteered to be the light and sound technician for numerous AT awards assemblies. He has been instrumental in obtaining equipment, developing curriculum and instructing the Electrical Photovoltaics Course the past terms. He now is instrumental in developing the Electrical PV certificate program that will be taught at the Workforce Training Center. I feel he has and continues to provide exceptional and outstanding support for the Applied Technologies School, the Electrical and PV programs, the faculty and especially the students he instructs.

Uvaldo Medina

Provided Exceptional and Outstanding Support

Uvaldo Medina, Electrician, was nominated because of the excellent service he provides to the Montoya Campus on a daily basis. Uvaldo is communicative and always keeps us informed regarding the status of a request. He is friendly and has a great attitude, even assisting with tasks that are not part of his normal duties, such as furniture movement.

Cecilia Miranda

Provided Exceptional and Outstanding Support

Cecilia has been a great asset to the Student Activities & ID Office since she was asked to provide staff coverage when the previous Student Activities Coordinator went on medical leave in March 2010 and to current date. Cecilia was an employee for the Center for Community Programs & Partnerships and continued to do work for that office as well as taking the work load for the Student Activities Office with no errors. Cecilia is a very dependable and reliable employee who always goes above and beyond the call of duty.

Annabelle (Patricia) Myers

Provided Exceptional and Outstanding Support

In April of each year, Montoya Campus sponsors a recognition luncheon for the Manzano High School special needs students and teachers participating in a work program. Last April, Annabelle not only assisted with the luncheon, but also decorated the tables. She purchased table cloths and gathered flowers and greenery from around the campus to arrange in vases for each table, making the tables very festive. She congratulated each student when they received their certificates of appreciation. Following the celebration, she cleaned up all of the decorations and tables. Annabelle has been a very positive influence for these Manzano High School students and her initiative and dedication is evident.

Nora Nixon

Performed Outstanding Act

Introductory Studies Site Coordinator Nora Nixon exemplifies CNM values of caring, excellence, and leadership. Nora performs outstanding acts daily. She encourages students to succeed by making herself available for one-on-one additional instruction and tutoring, over and above routine faculty office hours. She also responds to emergencies during her time off, such as the flood of the UNM Introductory Studies offices on July 16, 2010.

Steve Parratto

Provided Exceptional and Outstanding Support

Steve is a full-time instructor that has worked very hard in the CIS program. He is planning to retire Summer of 2011, and despite his winding down, he has committed to not only teach new courses in his program, provide long hours of college service in support of his program chair with curriculum development, faculty observations and faculty mentoring, but is also helping to create a bicycle safety program at CNM for faculty, staff and students. Steve is an example of someone who not only does their job, but steps up to make CNM great.

Carol Perez

Provided Exceptional and Outstanding Support

Carol was nominated for preparing and presenting a one-hour overview to students in BIT's OTEC 1170 (Telephone Techniques) course for both Summer 2010 and Fall 2010 at the request of Instructor Norma Barney. Ms. Perez was favorably received by both classes; students appreciated her relating her expertise and experience. She is an important resource for our students' success.

Kevin Ryan

Provided Exceptional and Outstanding Support

Kevin really put students first when a full-time faculty member was not able to complete their course load for the term. Kevin stepped in to take over all of the classes for this instructor. This was over and above what was required but he wanted to make sure there was continuity in the program and that students would not suffer because of an unavoidable situation.

Joe Schaub

Provided Exceptional and Outstanding Support

Joe does an outstanding job to assist students. The above and beyond however, is what makes him a true asset to Applied Technologies. Joe often comes in early and doesn't even take time to change out of his bicycling gear before he meets with students. He often stays late to meet with students. Joe has an extreme passion for making sure students understand opportunities available to them and visits every AT class to talk to students. He is also very insistent on making AT a community that students want to be a part of.

Mel Shelton

Provided Exceptional and Outstanding Support

During the planning, construction and instructional equipment installation phases of CNM's two new buildings: the Rio Rancho campus and the SRC, Mel took on a leadership role in Instructional Media Resources. He participated in the review of the planned instructional spaces, worked with vendors to design the instructional equipment systems and coordinated with the Purchasing Dept. to develop the request for quotes. He also worked with PPD staff, architectural designers and construction company personnel to deploy the equipment systems in the facilities. All this was done in addition to the day to day IMR multi-campus operations for which he is responsible. Glenys helped get the Rio Rancho faculty office up and running. She took time to get things organized, such as setting up cubicles assignments for 45 faculty members. Glenys went above and beyond her regular work duties to make sure that all employees who were going to be starting at the Rio Rancho campus had everything that they needed to make a good start. She took care of all these extra duties while still attending to her required duties as scheduling coordinator.

Glenys Thompson

Provided Exceptional and Outstanding Support

Glenys went above and beyond her regular work duties to make sure that all employees who were going to be starting at the Rio Rancho campus had everything that they needed to make a good start. Wesley Wormwood

Innovative Idea

Wesley created a "Web for Faculty Handbook" to assist Communication, Humanities and Social Sciences faculty in their use of Web for Faculty. The handbook was so successful it has been adopted by the college and is now given to all new CNM faculty at orientation.
