Last year, CNM finished the tournament ranked 26th out of 232 colleges. Start recycling now and help CNM climb the rankings this year in the name of sustainability.

Colleges will compete to see which can recycle the most waste on a per-capita basis, which produces the least amount of waste, and which recycles the largest percentage of their overall waste.

The winning colleges will receive trophies made of recycled materials and bragging rights as national recycling champions. Last year, CNM finished 26th out of 232 colleges and universities. CNM recycled 54 percent of its waste during the two-month competition, an eight percent increase from the 2014 RecycleMania event. This year, the school will try to increase the percentage again.

“Our goal is to provide hands-on activities to improve our recycling efforts at CNM” said Asa Stone, co-chair of the Sustainability Curriculum Committee.

“We will have an Adopt-A-Recycling-Bin Contest again this year,” she said. “We are replacing existing green cardboard recycling bins with new cardboard recycling bins. To raise awareness and excitement around new bins, we are encouraging CNM members to adopt them and decorate them. Any CNM groups of three or more are eligible to adopt a new bin.”

Also as part of RecycleMania, a Service Learning project will be offered as an “in-house” project. This year, students will develop educational activities for K-12 students, which will be showcased at Mt. Recyclemore (formally known as Mt. Trashmore.) on March 2 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Max Salazar Hall parking lot of Main Campus.

There will also be other events, including a seminar series throughout the tournament and a student conference at the conclusion of the tournament. Students who are interested in participating in the student conference as a presenter or an attendee should contact Monique Lacoste at mlacoste@cnm.edu, the student conference coordinator and a communications instructor.

On Thursday, Feb. 11, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. on Main Campus at the Physical Plant Department building, Room 102 A, there will be a RecycleMania Education Expo.

Members of the Sustainability Curriculum Committee include Melanie Archibeque, Carson Bennett, Molly Blumhoefer , Jennifer Brower, Luis Campos, Heather Fitzgerald , Lupe Fuentes, Justin Golightly, Monique Lacoste, James Moffett , Dai Nguyen, Anthony Rael , Sandra Rourke, Sue Ruth, Asa Stone, Paula Smith-Hawkins , Lis Turkheimer and Ursula Waln.
