When 12-year-old Izzy spends the summer in her nana’s remote New Mexico village, she discovers long-buried secrets that come alive in an enchanted landscape of majestic mountains, whispering winds and tortilla suns -- infused with the flavor of the southwest and sprinkled with just a pinch of magic.

“The play deals with themes of family and finding your story rooted very much in a New Mexican world. Izzy struggles with who she is, who her family is, and how to find her own story,” said Martin Andrew (you have his last name spelled two different ways?), director. “Theatre is the perfect medium to explore these ideas through a magical lens and with this production we bring that magic to life. This play will be particularly enchanting for elementary-aged audiences.”

“Tortilla Sun” is CNM’s first Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) production and is appropriate for the whole family.

CNM focuses on creating theatrical productions as well as training students to use theatrical skill sets such as design, research, performance and collaboration in other professions. CNM launched a degree program in theatre in 2014. The program introduces students to the basics of theatre, acting and production.

Tortilla Sun” runs for three weekends beginning March 24. Shows are Friday and Saturday nights (March 24, 25, 31 and April 1, 7, 8) at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees (March 26, April 2 and April 9) at 2 p.m.  All performances will take place at CNM’s Coal Avenue Theatre (The CAT), which is located on Coal Avenue between University and Buena Vista. Tickets are $5 for everyone, general admission.
