CNM's new Bilingual Customer Service Representative Certificate Program begins this fall.

The classes for the certificate are meant to improve the technical English proficiency for native Spanish speakers who are interested in gaining employment at a customer service workplace. For this reason, all the classes are taught in English.

“This certificate program responds to a significant need of industry partners in New Mexico,” said Jorge Cisneros, CNM’s Bilingual Program manager. “We’ve heard from companies like Verizon, Comcast and T-Mobile regarding the difficulties they encounter when trying to fill bilingual positions because they can’t find people with the skills they need.”

There is high demand for qualified bilingual personnel who are able to express themselves fluently using proper business vocabulary, both in English and Spanish. The certificate program will prepare candidates for jobs such as bilingual customer service representative, bilingual client relations representative, bilingual call center representative and bilingual online support specialist.

The one-term, six-class, 17-credit hour program is a collaboration between the CNM School of Business & Information Technology (BIT) and School of Adult & General Education (SAGE). The certificate includes four ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes, specifically designed to improve technical English in the context of customer service. Students who successfully complete these four classes will receive an ESOL certificate.

Students will go through the courses together in a cohort model. Courses include Customer Relations; Business Telephone Techniques; Academic and Workplace Communication for Specific Purposes; Reading and Vocabulary for Specific Purposes; English Composition and Grammar for Specific Purposes; and U.S. Culture and Contemporary Issues for Specific Purposes.

Those interested in the certificate program are invited to attend one of the following information sessions: Wednesday, July 26, at 5 p.m.; and Friday, Aug. 11, at noon. Both sessions will be held at CNM’s Main Campus in Ted Chavez Hall, Room 110. For more information, contact Jorge Cisneros at (505) 224-4000, Ext. 53351 or .
